About Adirondack Shelters

The Adirondack Shelters, located near the northern most point of Catoctin Mountain Park, provide a destination for true nature immersion and an alternative to drive-up camping. A moderate three-mile uphill hike over rocky but generally gently rolling terrain leads to the three-sided shelters similar to those found on the Appalachian Trail. Please plan to pack out everything you bring to the site. At Catoctin Mountain Park, the beauty and solitude of nearly 6,000 acres (2428 ha) of mature Eastern Hardwood Forest beckon visitors in need of an escape.

What Guests Are Saying

The shelter and surrounding area were clean, with a delightful morning chorus of bird songs. Reviewers noted that all conditions were as promised, and trails nearby were well marked. It's recommended to bring your own toilet paper for the outhouse.

Definitely a 4 mile hike from Camp Round Meadow, not 3. Follow the signs for the shelters and you'll get there no problem. Some poison ivy along the trail so be sure to have your legs covered. The shelters are in great shape. There was some trash in shelter 1's outhouse because some people aren't great. Firewood was piled up by the firepit so we started a fire with that and then collected wood to restock the pile. No shortage of firewood in the area. We were joined by a doe and her fawn in the evening which was nice. Beautiful and peaceful place to camp.

Lovely spot in the woods. Pleasantly surprised by the latrine (one for each shelter). Only downside to shelter #2 is the carpenter bees. They didn’t bother us though and were quiet at night. Note that if you’re doing the trail from camp meadow up through Owen creek, gather all your water before the shelter. There is a creek/water way on the map that is not accessible past the shelters (if you were to continue the loop clockwise). I’d love to return!

We were happily surprised by large piles of cut wood and an outhouse. Everything was kept in good condition, and we hope to come back soon.

Always a great time. Such a convenient getaway. A nice length hike in and a pleasant place to stay. I always enjoy a nice fire and the bright stars at night. Great trip for a quick retreat!
