The Ironman Michigan triathlon will be taking place Sunday, September 20, 2026.The bike course takes place on M-22 and will have significant impact on local traffic. M-22 will be closed from 8:30 am to approximately 2 pm between the City of Frankfort and Esch Road.To avoid road closures, arriving campers should not arrive before the scheduled check-in time of 2 pm.To avoid road closures, departing campers should exit by 8:30 am via Deadstream Road, Platte Road, or M-22 northbound. Southbound M-22 will be closed.

About Platte River Campground

Platte River Campground is located in the southern district of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, on the lower peninsula of Michigan. This year-round facility is one of the most popular campgrounds in the park. It is within walking distance of the Platte River and a short walk or drive away from the Lake Michigan shore. Hikers can access many of the area's day use and backpacking trails just north of the campground. Summer temperatures range from the upper 70s to 90 degrees F (25° to 32° C) during the day, and from the 50s to 70 degrees F (10° to 25° C) at night.  Winters are cold, with daytime highs from 20° to 30° F (-7° to -1° C) and lows in the 10s and 20s F (-12 to -7° C). Snow is usually on the ground from late November through March.

Campground is excellent and clean. Several good hiking trails close by. Fun shopping at Glen Arbor and Frankfort. Beautiful sunset at Point Betsie.

Large campsite, full shade. You’ll have people walking past on the trail right behind the campsite in order to get to beach, but it was never a problem. The mile walk to the beach is peaceful and easy. This site is close to the bathroom and dumpster. Extremely clean facilities! Friendly staff.

There was a ranger program with a Native American named Eric. He was wonderful. If at all possible, please explicitly list the existence of that type of program availability on Recreation.gov. One can stay at a hotel or private sector campground; however they do not have NPS ranger programs.

First time visitor to this campground and it was awesome. Stayed in loops 1 & 4. Loop 1 had a great site, clean restrooms, and the amphitheater was a great place to walk my dog. Loop 4 just exceeded all expectations. Site was amazing and the sites aren’t too close together. Restrooms and showers clean and close and overall Platte River campground was a great place to stay.

I love camping at the Platte River Campground. My granddaughter loves the river and learned to float there this year.
I try every year. I’ve been able to get a site every year for the last 25. It’s not always easy to get a site but with any luck, I’ll be back next year with my grandkids . ❤️❤️

Campground was really nice, sites are pretty spaced out and wooded. Shower house and bathroom were also nice and conveniently located within each camp loop. The trail to the beach was near our site and was a really pretty hike.

All visitors must have an entrance pass (separate from camping fees). The park also honors Federal Recreational Lands America the Beautiful (e.g., Resident Annual, Non-Resident Annual, Senior, Access, Military, 4th Grade, Golden Age). For more information visit the park's Fees & Passes web page. The Michigan Recreation Passport is not valid for entry at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which is a federally managed site.
