Grand Island is a best kept secret through and through for sure. Not at all buggy in the fall and the cabin was well stocked and staffed. The staff dropped off additional wood while we were there and brought propane when we got low. Bring your mountain bike! This island is larger than you imagine, but very doable. The trails in the south are wide and open for the most part. Rent a trailer for gear transport. Sunset Cabin, when you hit the beach, keep going south, other worldly. Dress for everything. We rode bikes to the Trout Bay overlook (*****) and went down to the camp area on Trout bay. The north wind froze us into our sweatshirts. Then after enjoying the beach and riding back to the Sunset Cabin, there was no wind and we were sweating to get in the water!

Better than we anticipated! There was an outhouse, an actual gas grill and 4 chairs that can be moved around outside

Cabin is great...nicely furnished and clean. Great inside picnic table, shelves and hooks for storage. Sun porch with nice chairs and grill. Mattresses are hard and somewhat noisy. Bring a sheet to dampen the sound. Cabin is dark inside even during the day so bring a good lantern. Outhouse is great; clean even though it is not fully enclosed at floor and roof. Walkways to outhouse are really nice. Outdoor picnic table and fire ring at the back of the cabin are nice if you can handle the mosquitoes. Beach is right across the path so access to water and sunset make the experience complete.
Ten mile bike ride to North Beach was very challenging but worth it. Water was cool but swimmable when calm. Trout beach is closer and also very nice...long wide shallow soft sand beach with great bathrooms and trash bins. The water is crystal clear when calm. Beach stones are beautiful!

I highly recommend.

Sunset cabin is fantastic. Beautiful location on the island, very clean, love the front porch area with chairs, firewood available, nice size, lots of storage and hooks. One of the best "rustic" cabins I have stayed at. The sunset really was spectacular from there as well. Highly recommend. We did explore the entire island on our mountain bikes and there were some challenging areas for sure, but the beauty of the views from the island and in particular the north section was absolutely worth the effort!

Wonderful location at merchant cabin, 1 mi hike in, was told there was a gas grill but it did not work, mattresses were very thin- overall a good stay!

We have visited Grand Island many times and camped in various sites. The cabin is the way to go, we were able to escape the rain and mosquitoes and enjoy this lovely rustic cabin. We will be doing this again!

We stayed at sunset cabin in Feb. A beautiful and remote setting. The only draw back is no potable water. There was plenty of clean snow to melt but is fuel intensive. The cabin was in great condition upon our arrival and already warmed up. A very welcomed surprise after a 5 mi snowshoe treck in. We had a wonderful 3 night stay and will be going back next winter weather permitting.

Sunset Cabin is clean and comfortable with a nice area around back for cooking and campfires. The propane grill is a huge plus and the park service provided more than enough fire wood. The beach is a 5 minute walk. Water spigot is a 10 minute walk. North Beach is a 7.5 mi (tough) hike.
