Hurricane River Campground

Family spent a wonderful week at Hurricane River. Beautiful and very peaceful. Campground clean and vault johns were pleasingly good. Prepare for cool nights sleeping, as Temps did drop into 40s during our stay. Kids loved playing at the river and swimming at the beach. Lots of good local hikes and things to do. Only complaint is the park reservation system....very difficult to get a reservation due to no availability yet at least half the sites are empty while there due to cancellation or no shows. Park service should change process to opening more sites, like half, for late reservations or first come first serve policy. Make any no shows that don't cancel pay a hefty price!

We spent two nights at Site #1 in Hurricane River (Lower) Campground July 3-5, 2022. Great access to trails and the beach from the campground! It's awesome to have a site reservable 4 days out from arrival for more spontaneous travelers. However, the site is right at the intersection of the parking lot for the beach and campground loop entry. Lots of traffic from cars going past the full parking lot and having to turn around/back out of the campground. Very open, no privacy, lots of traffic for this site. Other sites much more secluded and private. This really should be the Campground Host site or additional parking, if anything. Bathroom was two pit toilets. Bathrooms got heavy use from visitors to the beach and Au Sable Lighthouse trail that leaves from the campground. Kind of ruined it for the campers... Really need separate bathrooms for day use and campground. Or flush toilets with sinks to keep things cleaner. Lots of toilet paper on floor along with sand and soiling from messy visitors. Not ideal for rustic tent campers without a way to wash up after...

Beautiful and secluded sights. We stayed in the upper and lower loops and liked both. The upper loop (site 1) felt more isolated in the woods and the lower loop (site6) is close to the water where you can hear the waves at night. Site 1 on the upper loop has the the entire area to itself with no other sites for over 50 yards or so.

It’s a beautiful space. We could see the sun set over Superior through the trees from our camp site, and hear the waves all night.

There are no showers on the premises.

There were a lot of mosquitos, but mostly they didn't bite and regular OFF kept them at bay.
Great to walk to Lake Superior and the lighthouse.
Campsite was fine and had space to put up two 2-man tents

The Hurricane River Campground provided a nice camping experience. There were few sites, which offered a feeling of seclusion. That the site itself was set back from the campground road added to that feeling of seclusion and tranquility. Being among the tall trees was pleasant, and the campground's location just a short bit from the beach on Lake Superior was perfect for checking out the water. Had we more time, we would have loved to walk to the Au Sable lighthouse. The trail leaves a short bit from the campground.

Nice spot…though you can see your neighbors, and you need to know that the closest dump station is a private RV park in Grand Marias!

It was clean lot size was good

It was by luck i got this reservation. However while it says the campground was full when i booked there were multiple sites open. i hope you can go back and review the reservation process in full. As empty campsites during prime time is frustrating to see when so many want spots. Just because a person does not cancel despite knowing they won't come for the spot but cancelling does not give them money back so they don't care. possibly a system where they cannot reserve until 3 days prior next time would be a possibility.

We stayed at site 1 it is very secluded and a distance from the other campsites. We enjoyed there was lots of shade. The upper loop campground has a short trail down to the lower loop campground and direct access to Lake Superior. Beautiful, rustic spot.
