Host Anne was excellent. Services were generally clean.
We hiked to Chapel Rock on Sunday, August 9. Close to Chapel rock, there was a group of several young adults and a young woman was on the ground, prone. Over two mile from the trailhead, she was having a health episode. Park staff came a short time later, arriving on shore at Chapel Beach. It was apparent to us that she was not properly hydrated.
That trailhead serves several trails. It is popular in the summer and we had to park almost half a mile away. Latrines were in awful condition that day, yet most noteworthy was the complete absence of water supply for the many visitors to those trails. The NPS is well advised to install water service as soon as possible. A hand pump will be terrific and thus requires no solar panel or other service. The well, concrete pad and pump is all you need to tap the delicious water commonly found in Northern Michigan for the refreshment of many. Certainly, this is a better outcome than sending staff into the woods to assist someone in distress. Signage reminding to hydrate will also be beneficial. Thank you for reading this!
