I rated this excellent but I did not go because of the wildfire smoke in the area. I was sad. I plan to try again another time and hope it truly is an excellent stay.

Hurricane River Campground is praised for its beautiful location near Lake Superior, with clean facilities and well-maintained sites that offer privacy. Campers enjoy the easy access to hiking trails, pristine beaches, and the soothing sound of waves. However, many reviews mention issues with mosquitoes and the need for better campground management, including the presence of hosts and clearer information. Overall, it’s seen as a lovely spot, especially for hikers and nature lovers.

The bugs are insane, no cell service so couldn’t look into sketchy weather conditions headed our way (should’ve had a radio), the upper loop isn’t worth it, you basically have to drive or walk down a busy road to reach the beach, it’s not near anything and really secluded. Toilets smelled sickening. I’d return and stay in grand marais, Munising or Marquette. I’d just visit Hurricane River beach as a visitor since we had to drive there anyway. I didn’t realize it was 55 mins from pictured rock where we were going to do the kayaking trip but it was canceled. Bring long sleeves that are loose or douse yourself in deet and stay in a dining tent. The most aggressive and huge mosquitos I’ve ever seen. We left covered in welts, smoke ash from wildfires on everything and nothing ever dries in that forest, don’t bother bringing a dry line, everything got moldy and gross. It was nice to hear the waves, one night we could hear from the upper loop too, we had a good time on the beach but no luck with yooperlites. Such a maddening waste of time and I had such high hopes for this trip. The weather in the UP is extremely volatile. We checked the weather a couple days out to know what to expect it was a high of 70, low of 56, pretty typical UP weather. That first night it was 95 during the day, 75 at night and muggy and miserable. we came in beginning of July for reference. Good luck with that!

Beautiful campground, sites are well spaced. You can hear the lake as you drift off to sleep. Restrooms were cleaned regularly, which was nice. The 3 mi round trip walk to the light house is beautiful.

Great campsite, all of us remarked how clean and well kept the toilets were. From the upper loop there's a pretty trail down to the lower loop/beach area. The walk to the lighthouse is very pleasant with plenty of lookouts and stops on the Lakeshore on the way. The mosquitos and flies were around, as is to be expected in mid summer. Bring bug spray/bug repellants!

The campground is simple but clean, with vault toilets, water, and a wooded setting. Very quiet and secluded - no staff or other programming/facilities. The time of year we went, the bugs were so thick it was almost unbearable to be outside. Bug spray doesn't do much!

Secluded enough to make the site seem cozy but not isolated. A short hike down trail from the site is Lake Superior. Toilets are vault style but very clean. Bear boxes are located in the overflow parking lot.

Hurricane River Campground has great rustic camp sites which are just a short walk to the beautiful sandy beach of Lake Superior.
