We had a fantastic first-weekend-in-June stay at Pete's Lake Campground, despite the billions and billions of mosquitoes served. Other than the plethora of hungry vampires, the other negative were the campground water pumps out of service, necessitating risking your blood supply to hike to the beach for water. A huge shout-out to the camp hosts who flew to the top of rankings with their friendliness, helpfulness, and diligence in maintaining spotless latrines. I've never actually enjoyed the smell of a pit toilet before.
The campground itself is a gem. Plenty of privacy with wooded space between sites and the lake and Bruno's Run trail are amazing assets. We would have been content with just the local amenities, but with a short drive down to Munising and Picture Rocks and Valley Spur mountain bike trails, it's equally hard to sit still. Also, if you're a bird lover, there is no better time than early June to be in this place. SO MANY BIRDS singing right overhead - rose breasted grosbeaks, veery, warblers, cowbirds, on and on. Just bring all of your mosquito (or blackfly, if you're a bit earlier) defenses.
Also of note: we have Verizon and there was ZERO cell service (SOS only) in the entire Hiawatha area around the campground. This was fine for us, but may be of concern to others.
