Canoe/camped with a group of six along the AuSable from Mio to Loud Dam. Campsite 1 was spacious and not too difficult to get in and out of the water and get the gear up to the campsite. The site isn't very well marked from the river though and we almost drifted by!
Campsite 14 was excellent. Plenty of room and easy to get in and out of the river with gear.

Sites need to be marked better when you are canoeing down the river so you can find them. Also the portage areas for some of the dams are not well marked for first timers down the river. Some campsites were left trashed and the campfire pits were really dirty, filled with rubbish. Being on the river was beautiful. Lumberman's is a great stop as you work your way down the river.

The sites are large with direct water access.
The view is spectacular with space between sites enough to let you imagine you are the only ones on this part of the planet. The pit toilets have always been clean but we bring a 20 ft. Trailer with everything we need including water and fully charged batteries.
A boat launch is just down the road but we bring a canoe and have had some luck fishing. We camp early spring & late fall in order to get reservations. I only wish we could find more sites like this during the summer. It is our first choice to camp here all others will have a hard time meeting these standards.

The Au Sable is one of the most beautiful scenic places in Michigan. I’ve camped in boat-in sites and several places along the river on various loops. You can always count on a clean camp site with ample space between your site and the next one. I hope this place is around for decades more of outdoor enjoyment to come.

The best! We camped here raising our kids and now we all still camp together with their families! We kayak so we love that we can slide into the water from our campsite. We love that its secluded & not very many people.

Great campsite on the big island on Cooke pond on the Au Sable River in the shadow of the Lumberman's Monument, flat and on high ground very private except for a couple of racoons trying to take our food they didn't like that it was locked up. Great fishing and sites.
The down side, nothing to do with the site.
It's about other campers not properly disposing of human waste (please dig a latrine or bring a portable toilet like we do) don't use the hiking paths around the camp site and leave your business for others to find.

Designated campsites are spread along 55 miles of river shoreline between the AuSable River Access at 4001 Bridge (7 miles northwest of Glennie, MI) to near the Whirlpool AuSable River Access (4 miles west of Oscoda, MI).
