Cute little (tiny) cabin in a quiet spot. There was no propane cook stove but a new propane lantern. Plenty of pots and pans but no plates, cups, or bowls. A few old forks. Take your own kitchen stuff. Flies are bad but easily cleared out and once the windows get opened the live ones clear out. If you hike in or out via Cottonwood Creek plan for lots of foot/bike traffic and dogs. Cottonwood Creek trail past the cabin to the basin is worth hiking.

The cabin is SMALL, but great!
The stove is certainly big enough to heat the place, but dry wood is a must. The wood collecting is the responsibility of the renters. Dead and down is what can be used. With at least 3 feet of snow around the cabin, that’s a bit tough! We were fortunate that the previous renters left split wood inside the cabin, but still it was hard to get a fire going. We ended up putting some of the wood on the stove to warm it up. We found that looking around in the trees for any branches with dead needles and small dead limbs worked quite well as kindling. The mattresses on the bunk bed were comfortable and of good size for a bunk bed. The little table is quite functional, but solid wood or thick metal would be easier to clean. A bit of repair to fill the cracks in the walls could improve the temperature in winter.
We very much enjoyed our stay at the cabin. We hope to go again.

Cabin has covered mattress pads - bigger/thicker than a camping pad - so no need to pack those in. Also has a good saw. Bring something essential to leave! TP, new journal for the cabin is needed, new kettle would be good. Thanks to whomever left us plenty of wood for when we first arrived! We of course replenished. We're lucky the United States Forest Service provides places for those of us who like to go further into the wild.

Remote cabin. Moose scat scattered around, but no sighting. Creeks nearby. There was some people/dog food left in the cabin which can encourage mice which carry hantavirus. Lots of firewood and downed trees nearby - no need for a fire in late May. An outhouse is nearby. The bunks aren't the most comfortable, but satisfactory.

Had a great time at the cabin! Nothing fancy, but comfy and enjoyed the accommodations. The cabin was clean and orderly and great for two people.

Fox Creek was a serene little place in the pines. It had all the comforts (woodstove, bed) to stay nice n warm, even by myself in early October. There were many flies wanting to hangout, but no other creatures. I hiked in from Langohr and it was an easy, pleasant 2.5 mile forest saunter down grassy meadows, through tall trees running by a creek surrounded in yellowing leaves, and around a bend into the corner of the woods nestling this lovely little cabin. A creek flows nearby, allowing for easy access to water, and birds sang in the treetops above. There were hatchets and an axe there so you could easily find wood to chop outside. There were the basic cooking amenities neatly stacked on the walls, like oil, spices, some random utensils, a lighter, fuel cans, and other basics like a deck of cards and some cabin notebooks. It was a great stay for some glamorous "camping" out in our Bozeman backyard. I'd highly recommend this excellent little getaway for a night or two out in the quiet, to listen to your brain again.

This is a great little cabin! We came over History Rock and got it just as it got dark. There was enough wood, we just had to cut it down smaller to actually make any heat. The stove may have a dirty flue as lots of smoke came back inside any time we added wood.

There is no motorized access to this cabin. There are two travel options to Fox Creek Cabin:
1. South Cottonwood Trailhead. From Bozeman, MT: Drive south on S. Cottonwood Road for about 7 1/2 miles. Turn left onto Cottonwood Canyon Road and drive about 2.1 miles to the end of the road and the South Cottonwood Trailhead. Travel approximately 6 miles on S. Cottonwood Trail 422 to the junction with the History Rock Trail 424. Travel about 1/4 mile more on History Rock Trail 424. Look for a side trail on your right. Travel this trail and follow the signs about 1/4 mile more to the cabin. This is the recommended winter route (December 2 through June 15). The cabin is small and nestled in trees and may be difficult to find when snow covered.
2. Langohr. From Bozeman, MT: Drive south on S. 19th Ave. for about 7 miles. Turn left onto Hyalite Canyon Road FS 62. Drive 6.3 miles on Hyalite Road 62 to the intersection with Langohr Road FS 6230 (closed December 2 - June 15). Drive about 5 miles up FS Rd 6230 to the end of the road (stay on FS Road 6230). Take the path to the south to join with Trail 424 and travel west (right). Hike, bicycle or horseback ride for a total of about 2.5 miles to the junction with the cabin access trail, which is about a 1/4 mile before you reach the South Cottonwood Trail 422. ROAD CLOSURE INFORMATION: (Please refer to the Motor Vehicle Use Map) Hyalite Canyon Road, FS 62, closes to all motorized vehicles the evening of March 31 through May 15. Hyalite Canyon Road FS 62 is intermittently plowed during the winter.
