About Window Rock Cabin

Window Rock Cabin was built in 1940 and now offers a year-round retreat for outdoor enthusiasts. It is ideally located in one of Gallatin National Forest's most popular recreation areas. The cabin is accessible by car in the summer. During the spring (from March 31st through May 15th) the road to the cabin is closed to motorized vehicle traffic every year. Guest should be prepared to hike or bike 12 miles to the cabin during this period. During winter months the access road is infrequently plowed, so guests should be prepared with a four wheel drive, high clearance vehicle or to ski up to 12 miles to the cabin. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

Great as always! From bare ground to 18” overnight…pure magic! We had Window rock in February and the axes really need to be sharpened!

Great little cabin in Hyalite. I would sleep more than four people here though. Great fire pit area and beautiful views.

One of the cleanest forest service cabins I’ve ever been to. Great pit toilet too! Road hadn’t been plowed but with winter driving skills and a subaru with 8.7 in of clearance made it fine to the pull out designated for the cabin off the single lane road past the reservoir and palisades trailhead. We bright a snow shovel that came in handy to dig out the spot and continue the tradition of digging out the path to the cabin, pit toilet, and wood shed. We used a standard plastic kid sled to haul our stuff up the path. Came with my 66 year old mom and she was able to make the walk easy peasy. Will definitely be back in the future with friends to use the beds in the loft and crosscountry ski especially now that I saw that the crescent lake trail connects to the trail at the cabin.

We spent 5 nights at this beautiful cabin. It is very well taken care of by the forest service and by most of the visitors. New roof, new paint and new window screens. The accessible outhouse is also new. No mice inside the cabin during our visit but we did see a couple them scurrying around on the porch outside at night.

We enjoyed the hiking trail right from the cabin with an unforgettable meadow and views of the reservoir. Also enjoyed the Grotto Falls trail at the end of the road. Took our raft out on the reservoir. Nice views from the property and excellent star gazing. We also enjoyed a wicked thunder and lightning storm one night from the porch. Not much wildlife on our trip but we did have the special treat of viewing 2 mountain goats in our binoculars on several occasions across the way on Sleeping Giant Mountain!

Not the most private cabin though with several people on different occasions inviting themselves up from the trail and up the driveway. A very nice cabin in a beautiful setting, just know you may not have complete privacy.
