About Window Rock Cabin

Window Rock Cabin was built in 1940 and now offers a year-round retreat for outdoor enthusiasts. It is ideally located in one of Gallatin National Forest's most popular recreation areas. The cabin is accessible by car in the summer. During the spring (from March 31st through May 15th) the road to the cabin is closed to motorized vehicle traffic every year. Guest should be prepared to hike or bike 12 miles to the cabin during this period. During winter months the access road is infrequently plowed, so guests should be prepared with a four wheel drive, high clearance vehicle or to ski up to 12 miles to the cabin. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

Great cabin and location! It was especially nice to read the history book about the cabin and the Log Book of previous visits.

Our kids (7 and 4) loved it. Great area for sledding and xc skiing in the winter. Easy to cook meals on a cast iron skillet right on the wood stove. Just a short walk up from the gate-- we brought a sled to pull up our supplies.

Had a great time enjoying all the fresh snow. The cabin is now stocked the with most everything you need to cook meals. Pots, pans, skillets, tea & coffee pots, plates, cups, and utensils. Enjoyed the views and skiing right out the door.

The cabin was in great shape and I saw no mouse droppings. If you plan to use the propane lantern, be sure to bring new mantels as well as propane.

Such a beautiful cabin! Skied in from the reservoir for a couple night stay, though also easily accessible from the road. Cozy, clean, quiet, great access to surrounding trails.
