About Wall Creek Cabin

Located at the east base of the Gravelly Range, Wall Creek Cabin is a small dwelling that gives guests access to prime elk and deer viewing, as access is through a state Wildlife Management Area. It is typically open to the public from mid-May through November, offering ample opportunity to explore southwestern Montana. Built in about 1930, the rental cabin was originally a crew quarters/warehouse/garage. The compound served as headquarters for the Wall Creek Ranger District, later the Madison District, until the 1940s. There are currently four log buildings at the site, including the small rental cabin, a barn and a main "Ranger" cabin and it's woodshed. The barn and corral and main cabin are used by grazing permit holders. Only the smaller cabin with a small holding corral is available for public use. Though usually quiet, there may be work activity associated with grazing management, with cowboys, horses and dogs living at the site, and their days often start early. The site can easily be reached by vehicle though roads may be muddy or snow covered. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

What Guests Are Saying

The reviewer was unable to stay for the first two nights due to their husband's illness but looks forward to returning next year. They appreciated the beautiful surroundings and cleanliness of the cabin, although they noted the presence of a nearby neighbor and a reservation error regarding availability. Overall, the experience was positive despite the initial setbacks.

Was unable to go for the first 2 nights as my husband had Covid….thought he was fever free and booked the next 2 nights and he was still ill. So sad we didn’t get to see Dave, hope he is well.
Look forward to next year 😎

Somebody else was there during our reservation, and after checking the website, the cabin had been listed "first-come-first-served" during our reservation dates. I confirmed the dates, this is a FS error.

Beautiful surroundings, easy to find, super clean cabin. Didn’t realize I would have a neighbor 20 yards away.

The cabin is well equipped. Bring a few little propane bottles and food. Fortunately I had a spare mantle with me for the provided light, as one needed to be replaced. (small signal size). Wood stove will turn the cabin into a sauna if you let the fire run to hot, to long. First snow of the year while we were here and it was beautiful. Seen some deer and elk but no shooters.(Elk season just started 2 days prior).

A nice hideaway with spectacular views. Surrounding buildings, barn, etc make it even more quaint. The horses that pasture there and the rancher who handles them are a joy and he was a lot of fun to talk to.

We were at Wall Creek Cabin just a few days ago (mid July 2022). All other FS cabins I've been to (about 20) have that same concrete vault outhouse. Not this one. You get an old fashioned handmade outhouse. Even the seat and lid were homemade. It wasn't horrific inside but it was getting uh....full. And my gf found a garter snake in it. Nearest outhouse alternative is 6 miles of bumpy dirt road away.
You also get a clear view of HWY287 from the cabin, BUT it is 3 miles away and you can't hear anything and lights don't shine on u either. It's just weird that you are otherwise really remote.
You won't be alone. There's another cabin 200' away. Occupied by a legit cowboy (hat, 6 shooter, boots, etc). He's a nice guy though. I assume he's under contract with the FS to perform various duties in the area.
You better like horses cuz four mostly just roam free in the 10 acre or so enclosure that the 2 cabins are in. They are curious and pretty friendly. Just use common sense around them. The cabin was fine. No issues at all and it was in good shape.
The road in was bumpy but fine with the Subaru. Really any passenger car could make it. Beautiful weird country. Deer. Antelope and a coyote. Close to the Madison River.
I give it only 4 stars because the outhouse situation almost ruined it for my gf. And if you want to fish, you have to travel 6 miles of road to the river. Otherwise it's a 5 star experience. One of the most unique cabin experiences I've had. The view was worth $1000 a night and interacting with the horses was really fun.

Road going in is a little rough so probably not best for low clearance vehicles. Great views and clean, well equipped cabin.
