About Mcguire Mtn. Lookout Rental

McGuire Mountain Lookout was originally constructed in 1923 and was actively used as an observation point for detecting forest fires for over 20 years before it was abandoned around 1944. The structure was later renovated between 1983 and 1998 and is now available for rent for up to four people. McGuire Mountain is located approximately 14 miles southwest of Eureka. Access to the lookout requires a 2.5 mile hike from the parking area at Little Sutton Mountain; visitor arrival is dependent on road and weather conditions.

What Guests Are Saying

McGuire Mtn. Lookout Rental offers a beautiful getaway with stunning views of Lake Koocanusa and exceptional sunsets and sunrises. The hike is generally easy and enjoyable, with rustic accommodations that include a loft for panoramic views and games for entertainment. However, guests should be prepared for bugs, as the lookout can be fly and mosquito-infested, and the lack of screens may pose a challenge during warmer weather.

McGuire lookout as a destination for getting away from it all is a spectacular choice. My 10 yo grandson and I packed in our overnight supplies on the 2+ mile moderate hike mid-afternoon and stayed through the next morning, leaving around 9. The accommodations were sufficient but set your expectations low. The views and other aspects of the site are exceptional. We had great weather but would suggest not making the trip if rain is expected as there really is nowhere to seek cover aside from the lookout which, while rustic and somewhat charming, is not comfortable.

Easy and pleasant hike to the lookout but as of late July ‘25 the road up to the trailhead from the west side is pretty overgrown with brush. The lookout was in good shape and although there aren’t any mattresses for the two bed platforms there foam mats so I didn’t even use the sleeping pad I had brought.

My second time here and just as enjoyable as the first. This time I found the shorter approach (2.5 miles) and read the logbook laughing that so many of us make the trail error. The lookout was quaint and clean as usual. We enjoyed the most stunning sunset and sunrise and very cool temperatures overnight that made us appreciate the wood stove for 30 minutes in the morning. The springs below the lookout had water but also Hellabore so we did not use them. I always love this lookout and can't wait for the next trip!
