Eagle Creek Campground - Custer Gallatin National Forest

Very remote location. There were elk all over the campground.
No shade. Uneven sites. Lots of black flies in July.
Clean vault toilets. One bear box for 4 or 5 sites. No garbage disposal.
Be aware this is half way up a mountain with a steep 6% slope and hairpin turns.
The views were amazing. You could see Mammoth Hotsprings from the upper sites.

Although the RV trailer we pull is rather small, the hill climb up to this campsite was a stretch for our truck. This is way up high, away from anything in town or in the National Park. We thought it would be good for camping in while exploring Yellowstone, but not only difficult for the steep trek up, but also the trek down the backside (north side) of Yellowstone and into Gardiner, MT was daunting. We found out later from a local that they have re-routed the road, using an old abandoned stagecoach road, while they repair major damage that was done during the extreme floods of June 2022. Better to try the west side of the park or in the Grand Tetons for camping, if you can't get one in the park.
Maybe we hit a bad time, but the bugs and flies were unbearable. We couldn't even crack open our door without dozens of biting flies working their way in, as well as mosquitos, and moths at night. The one nice thing was that a herd of Elk came to graze in our campsite, and we could watch them out the windows.

This campsite was over grown, flooded by a beaver dam, unlevel, rutted and the only possible place for our tent was right on the road. This is the only campsite we’ve ever looked at and drove away.

We spent 2 nights here, site 7. Site 7 is by far the best site as it's at the end of the road, so no traffic and good privacy. The view is spectacular and you can see Mammoth Hot Springs in the distance. Avoid sites 5 and 6 as they flood due to beaver dams on the creek running behind them. The road up to the campground leaves a lot to be desired. It's gravel, washboard bumpy and steep with some switchbacks. Just go very slowly. The vault toilet was fine for an outhouse. ATT cell service was virtually nonexistent but there is good service down in town. Also a nice little grocery store in town. We would definitely go back.

Required shared bear boxes with campsite adjacent to you (only fits two coolers max). No garbage services despite full price rates and practically no shade if you arent in site 7.

Beautiful campground with easy access to Yellowstone National Park. Campground host was friendly and went out of his way to accommodate us.
