Eagle Creek Campground - Custer Gallatin National Forest

Although the RV trailer we pull is rather small, the hill climb up to this campsite was a stretch for our truck. This is way up high, away from anything in town or in the National Park. We thought it would be good for camping in while exploring Yellowstone, but not only difficult for the steep trek up, but also the trek down the backside (north side) of Yellowstone and into Gardiner, MT was daunting. We found out later from a local that they have re-routed the road, using an old abandoned stagecoach road, while they repair major damage that was done during the extreme floods of June 2022. Better to try the west side of the park or in the Grand Tetons for camping, if you can't get one in the park.
Maybe we hit a bad time, but the bugs and flies were unbearable. We couldn't even crack open our door without dozens of biting flies working their way in, as well as mosquitos, and moths at night. The one nice thing was that a herd of Elk came to graze in our campsite, and we could watch them out the windows.

Clean vault toilets. One bear box for 4 or 5 sites. No garbage disposal.
Be aware this is half way up a mountain with a steep 6% slope and hairpin turns.
The views were amazing. You could see Mammoth Hotsprings from the upper sites.

The location of the campground is excellent for going into Yellowstone NP. Also we got great Verizon cell service. The reason for low rating are 1. Campsites are severely unlevel
2. The weeds under and around picnic table were taller than the table.
3. Campground host did not even know where to take trash.
4. Host did not supervise reservations at all. No shows were not taken down so other people could use the campsites. We were never asked our name or anything
5. Basically the host was living there for free and wasn't doing his job. We were there for 4 days. So great location but no water , super unlevel sites and small camping area not maintained. Also some of the campsites had water running thru them making them unusable for tents. Host should have reported this so rec.gov could hav. e let people know

Campsite was occupied at 6:30 pm when I arrived and the folks there said they had paid also, so I had to find another area to camp. Interestingly, I checked the campsite at 1:00 pm that day and it was empty. I even left a camp chair there to show it was occupied. Not a good experience!

Quiet, clean, and conveniently located just outside of Yellowstone and Gardiner. There are very nice views of the surrounding mountains and we had a clear night sky to see the Milky Way. The bathroom was clean. All around a great short stay, would like to spend more time here!

It is a good location if you are coming to visit Yellowstone. It’s right next to a little creek. I was one site #1. It was group site, so super spacious. Two bear lockers and two huge picnic tables. There was no shape and no water supplies. No firewoods so bring your own. Bathroom was close by. Overall it was a good location for me to stop for a night before heading to Yellowstone.
