About Wurtz Cabin

Wurtz Cabin is located just south of the Canadian border, on the North Fork Road near the North Fork of the Flathead River. It is listed on the National Historic Register, offering guests a glimpse into the past. It provides access to a variety of recreational activities, including hiking, boating, fishing and viewing wildlife. The cabin can accommodate up to 12 people and is fully accessible. It can be accessed by vehicle, however the North Fork Road is gravel and only intermittently plowed in the winter. Four-wheel drive and chains are recommended for passage during winter months. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities. The majority of the road from Columbia Falls to Wurtz Cabin is gravel, so be prepared for dust during your drive and at the cabin.

We enjoyed a few days at Wurtz in late March. The road was a bit rough but we're used to dirt roads and potholes characteristic of spring in MT. The cabin has 3 bedrooms (1 downstairs + 2 upstairs) as well as a large loft space, and the beds are on casters so it's easy to arrange them between the upstairs rooms as needed for your group. Pro tip - bring a sheet or blanket to put over the mattress and under your sleeping bag, and disinfecting wipes to clean surfaces. The gas cooking stove made cooking a breeze and the kitchen was well stocked and clean. I made the mistake of saying that it appeared this cabin didn't have a mouse issue and then promptly saw one scurry across the living room. We couldn't find a mouse trap (which is unusual for FS cabins) so you might want to bring some. Unlike most FS cabins we've been to, this one didn't have many games so bring your own if family game time is your thing. Overall, it was a fun visit and we hope to come back in the summer sometime when the Polebridge Mercantile is open and we can take advantage of more hiking and swimming opportunities.

We so loved the remoteness of this cabin. Reading about the history gave me chills. What hardy people. Tough. The cabin has received much TLC over the century plus of its life to date. It is a superb structure. It is well supplied. Go across the road and follow the road to the river and explore. Lovely country. The woods is very dense but we explored various roads and found places to hike. Will return.

just a beautiful part of Northwest Montana, and the house is really well equipped as far as kitchen equipment. huge wolf stove, pit toilet well maintained, and you've got a huge yard and fire pit outside. I'm pretty sure upstairs there were three queen beds and something like six twins, and then there's a little bedroom with a queen bed on the ground floor plus ample seating couches and a wood stove in the main room. there's even a covered porch you can sit outside if it's raining or snowing, and I feel lucky that I got to stay there twice in the past 7 years.

Clean and comfy. The road is close and the dust can be bad if dry.

We really enjoyed our night spent in this historic cabin and the views are breathtaking! Only reason we didn’t give 5 stars was that not everyone who stays cleans the floors and surfaces after they leave, so we had a lot of grime. It’s pretty far away from FS offices for recreation staff to get out there between guests to check. We came prepared for that, with plenty of cleaning supplies and brought our own kitchen supplies, etc. The cabin was well stocked with cutlery, plates, cups, cookware and all.

I'm from Alaska where firewood is supplied in Forest Service cabins.
The Wurtz Cabin has firewood supplied only thru the end of April...it can get COLD in May!
I was hoping for enough firewood to heat the cabin as it was below freezing in the morning.
I stayed only 1 of the 2 nights because it was so cold.
