About Trail Creek Cabin

Trail Creek Cabin, built in 1924, was the original ranger station for the Bozeman Ranger District. It is available year round, offering guests the chance to enjoy summer or winter recreation. The cabin is located in a remote area that is not accessible by car or truck. Guests must travel on foot, horseback, motorized vehicle (under 50”) or mountain bike. In winter, skis, snowshoes or snowmobiles may be used to reach the cabin. The best route for arriving on foot or horseback is about 2 miles, while motorized vehicles (under 50”), and snowmobiles have a 5-mile route. Call the district office M-F, 8 to 4:30, for latest road/trail conditions. Check Travel Plan for restrictions and authorized dates. To get to the cabin on motorcycle or ATV via Goose Cr Trail No. 439, the dates allowed are from 6/16 to 12/1 annually. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and should be prepared to bring supplies and gear they need for a comfortable stay.

We had a great time! Cabin was very clean and well stocked. Note that there are in fact mattresses at the cabin. The hike in is nothing to scoff at and it would be very difficult to drag a sled in or a wagon on the Newman Creek access (2.3 miles). Very doable, but if you are hiking in, I recommend just a backpack. Absolutely gorgeous, woodstove was so warm and toasty. Plan to bring your own cookware and silverware, the mice have gotten into those. We hiked to Bear Lakes, which was a great route. There is no cell service, I recommend the Avenza USFS map download.

Hiked in in a snowstorm, the fireplace was a life saver - probably the most efficient and warm I've used in one of these cabins. I've been multiple times now, and it's always been great; woodshed well stocked, pit toilet clean, the space is tidy and has the usual amenities (baring water, which is always hit or miss). There's some traffic from atvs and hunters, but otherwise remote enough to see plenty of wildlife. By far my favorite cabin for short getaways.

Hike in was beautiful and pretty easy. No issues with parking. Got a visit from a herd of cows that passed in front of the cabin. Cabin itself was great and well provisioned. Liked that there was a fence around cabin for my dog to hang out unleashed

XC skied into the cabin for two nights mid February.

1. Contrary to recent reviews the propane lamp works beautifully.
2. There is a mouse living in the cabin. We suspect inside the camp stove on the table. Suggest relocating and setting the trap behind the wood stove to catch the wee bastard!
3. If you skied into the cabin I would highly recommend a trail adjacent to the cabin for a 1-2 hour excursion. Proceed straight out the front door towards the barb wire fence in the nearby meadow. Ten yards from the fence look to your immediate left for a trail entering the woods …. it’s a beauty!

We brought our snowshoes but didn't need them and left them at the car. Only 3-12 inches of snow and it was all packed down on the trail. The previous visitors left the cabin very tidy and well stocked and we tried to do the same for the next visitors as well. It appears the propane lamp doesn't work anymore, but someone left a recharageable light with a USB C adapter, highly recommend bringing a power bank and cord.

There is just a little bit of sporadic reception for both Verizon and AT&T, you will get texts and notifications here and there.
