About Trail Creek Cabin

Trail Creek Cabin, built in 1924, was the original ranger station for the Bozeman Ranger District. It is available year round, offering guests the chance to enjoy summer or winter recreation. The cabin is located in a remote area that is not accessible by car or truck. Guests must travel on foot, horseback, motorized vehicle (under 50”) or mountain bike. In winter, skis, snowshoes or snowmobiles may be used to reach the cabin. The best route for arriving on foot or horseback is about 2 miles, while motorized vehicles (under 50”), and snowmobiles have a 5-mile route. Call the district office M-F, 8 to 4:30, for latest road/trail conditions. Check Travel Plan for restrictions and authorized dates. To get to the cabin on motorcycle or ATV via Goose Cr Trail No. 439, the dates allowed are from 6/16 to 12/1 annually. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and should be prepared to bring supplies and gear they need for a comfortable stay.

What Guests Are Saying

Trail Creek Cabin offers a clean, well-stocked, and cozy retreat with recent upgrades and an efficient woodstove. The hike in is scenic and manageable, though some might find it challenging with heavy gear. While there are minor concerns, such as occasional mice and limited cell service, the overall experience is highly favorable, making it a favorite for short getaways and outdoor activities.

It was cold but cabin was warm. The area is a patchwork of private land and national forest service. Bring a map.

Beautiful winter excursion, so close to Bozeman but still feels like you're in the wild!

The hike in was totally doable for a couple of people from the prairie 🏔️🏔️

Cabin had plenty of firewood. Also included a pot for melting snow and some leftover propane that others had left. The stove worked well. The lantern needed new mantles. Heard one mouse but cabin was clean. No tinder to start a fire so it was good we brought some. The trail up to the cabin was boney and icy so we walked the half mile on our way out. Once up at the cabin, the Goose Ck Road was great for skiing both directions! We called the District office for conditions and to ask inventory questions but they couldn't answer anything so we had to find a friend of a friend of the office. Overall, great experience!

We had the best time at Trail Creek Cabin! My fiance, my dog, and I snowmobiled the five miles into the cabin with a sled attached with all our gear. It was fun chopping wood, going on walks, exploring, using the coleman grill, and playing games in the lantern light. So nice to get off the grid for two nights. Very clean and warm :)
