About Bar Gulch Cabin

Bar Gulch Cabin is located in the Big Belt Mountain Range in Helena National Forest. The cabin was originally constructed in the 1930s on Forest Service lands to be used for mining purposes. Instead, it was used for recreational purposes and issued a special use permit, which was transferred to several owners until it was donated to the Forest Service in 1988. Today the cabin is a rustic getaway for guests seeking relaxation and recreation in west-central Montana. It is accessible by car, but snow removal is not provided in winter. The cabin offers several amenities, but guests should be prepared to bring some of their own supplies and gear.

What Guests Are Saying

Bar Gulch Cabin offers a charming and spacious retreat in a peaceful area, appreciated for its unique local decor and quick heating. Many guests enjoy the nostalgic experience of disconnecting from modern amenities, although some note the cabin's proximity to trails limits seclusion. However, concerns about maintenance and cleanliness, particularly regarding rodent issues, have been raised, suggesting improvements are needed before it can be safely booked.

I am very disappointed to be writing this, the Bar Gulch cabin holds a special place in my heart. I have been coming here since I was a kid, and jumped at the chance at booking it again this summer. However, the cabin was in total disrepair, and uninhabitable. We ended up having to leave for health and safety purposes, as the entire cabin was riddled with rat droppings, including one of the beds. I understand that the forest service has experienced considerable set backs with the current administration, but I do not believe that this cabin should be allowed to be booked if it is in this condition. I was expecting to do some cleaning, but this was simply uninhabitable and unsafe for myself and my family.

Fairly secluded but just off the road. Very quiet. The local chapter of OHV riders was having a party/group camping trip in the next gulch over and heard nothing from it. Cabin is very spacious inside. Back entry by where you park is barely 6 foot. So duck if you’re taller.

This charming cabin has clearly taken on a special place in the hearts of visitors who have contributed to the unique local decor. The interior is spacious and situated in a peaceful area that was recently affected by a forest fire, which currently limits the presence of local wildlife. Because the cabin sits near a popular trailhead, guests should be aware that it does not offer the same level of seclusion as properties with gated entrances. Despite the lack of total privacy, it served as a wonderful getaway, and the surrounding forests remain a joy to explore.

We always enjoy this cabin. New beds and fresh paint, thank you! It was a great weekend!!! It does need a new fire extinguisher. We didn’t need it, but the one that is there is empty.

The cabin warms up quickly with the stove in the middle of the room. The only downside is the lack of lighting - come prepared!
