About Bull River Guard Station

The Bull River Guard Station was built in 1908 as the Ranger's house and office. This structure was a primary ranger station from 1908 to 1920, surviving the legendary 1910 fires that swept through the area. The cabin was home to Granville "Granny" Gordon (District Ranger), his wife and three daughters. Full vehicle access to the cabin depends on weather conditions. The road is normally plowed within 1 mi of the cabin during winter months.

What Guests Are Saying

The Bull River Guard Station offers an adorable, cozy cabin with charming old furniture, functional amenities, and a beautiful, peaceful natural setting, perfect for a relaxing getaway. Guests appreciated the historical significance and isolation of the location, as well as the well-stocked kitchen and comfortable accommodations. However, some noted issues with wasps, a lack of on-site water for dishwashing, and occasional mice, but overall, visitors found the experience enjoyable and worth recommending.

We have stayed at several cabins and smoke towers in the past and Bull River cabin is one of the best experiences we have had.
The setting, the area and the cabin itself were all great.
I wouldn't mind going back again.

We had a wonderful time bringing in the New Year at the Bull River Guard Station. The roads were still clear and we were able to drive right up to the cabin. We took a day hike on the trail to St. Paul lake and stopped just short due to heavy snow and potential avalanche danger. We fit 5 people comfortably in the cabin and it was warm and cozy inside. We have plans to return as soon as our schedules allow!

We had a wonderful time at this cabin! We visited over Memorial Day weekend, and it was just perfect. Definitely a place we will want to return to again. The Ross Creek Cedar Grove is nearby and was a nice place to visit as well.

Beautiful setting with historic magic. Great fire pit outside to enjoy the night sky. Wonderful hiking and fishing near by. Rustic to the max so come ready to enjoy living on the frontier. Can’t wait to go back.

Wonderful little cabin and we really enjoyed it. It wouldn't hurt to keep a bucket of lime in the outhouse to keep down the smell and if I ever can stay there in the warmer months, I sure hope there are screens for those windows.

The cabin is charming and was very clean. Thank you, previous renters! The location by the river is nice but had lots of visitors park by the cabin to go fishing.
The biggest complaint is that the cabin was recently restored but not to historic preservation standards. It is a shame that the FS historians allowed the electricity to be installed and for God's sakes they put in an electric furnace in lieu of the wood stoves. The charm of renting a truly historic 1908 cabin is no longer there.
The place desperately needs screens. Flies and mosquitoes are ubiquitous. "Wire Cloth" (window screens) were in common use by the late 1800's.
