About Yaak Mtn. Lookout Rental

Yaak Mountain Lookout rests atop its namesake peak at an elevation of 4,977 feet within the Rocky Mountains in the Kootenai National Forest. The lookout tower has been used as an observation point for spotting forest fires since 1958. The lookout is typically open from mid-June through late September. Access is available via primitive roads, and high clearance vehicles are recommended. This rustic retreat offers a few amenities, but guests will need to bring most of their own gear and supplies.

We had a great visit to the lookout. I liked the new view after the wildfires and previous logging activities opened the ridge views and the Kootenai valley.

Exceptional condition, beautiful views, and easy access. Despite the steep stairs, the lookout was incredible. Impressively clean and well furnished. The drive was easy and even though a forest fire has ripped through the area, it was absolutely gorgeous. The good cell coverage was a blessing and a curse. All in all, this is one of the best lookouts I've visited.

A wonderful stay. Appreciate the "closed access". Road is in great condition, although vegetation is getting close to the road the last 1/2 mile or so. The fire ring and cooking grate are in great condition and in a spot with an amazing westward view. The outhouse is as expected (not great, not bad either). Stairs are steep, as expected. SPECTACULAR 360 degree views from up top. Condition of the inside is as expected (not great, not bad either). Propane cook top works great, a nice feature (didn't use the oven or heater). Very sturdy winch system for hoisting your gear to the top (plan accordingly for straps, carabiners, etc). This was a great stay for the two of us, we'll definitely try and get another night in the future.
