About Apgar Campground

Apgar campground is the largest campground in the park. It is situated in trees and provides tent and RV campers with shade and some privacy. Evening sunsets on Lake McDonald are only a short stroll, and you won't want to miss evening programs with a ranger at the Apgar Amphitheater. Many trails are located within a short drive of the campground. Five Group Sites are reservable in advance.All sites require a reservation. Most sites have a 6-month booking window with a good handful having a 4-day booking window.

While I had no reception in the park, all reservations editing needed to be done online so once you are on site you are stuck if you have any problems. Our campsite was so steep it didn't work with our trailer and the only solution the camp hosts could tell me is just book a second site, eat the cost, and boohoo. Trying to deal with Recreation.gov was the worst part of our entire trip.

Very friendly camp hosts/rangers. The bike path that is dog friendly was a convenient beautiful walk. The picnic area offered beautiful views of the lake and a perfect spot for the dogs to swim. Food storage containers were convenient to store our grill in, we had one right at our campsite.
The deer were EVERYWHERE. Truly beautiful to see them laying down in the empty site next to us.

•old flathead river ranger station trail, beautiful scenic drive and hike with a wonderful overlook. We were to worried about bears to make it to the ranger station!
My ONLY complaint is that we were there for 8days and the showers were broken the entire time.

Apgar is a nice campground. The campsites have some privacy with good spacing between sites. There are very convenient water spouts and the bathrooms are clean with flush toilets. A few deer wander through the campground which is always magical. It is within easy walking distance to Apgar Village with a restaurant and stores and access to Lake McDonald. You can't see the lake from the campground. The one downside is that the campground is very close to the Going To The Sun Road and the traffic is constant and loud. The garbage trucks come through the campground at 7AM and and are VERY LOUD. Fish Creek campground, 3 miles down the road is MUCH quieter and a better choice, if you have a choice.

If you love camping with enough people to classify as a small city, this is your place. It does make for some interesting people-watching. Despite its popularity, though, it is surprisingly quiet, clean, and orderly. If campfires and trees don't do it for you, it's only a short drive, bike ride, or walk to West Glacier or Apgar Village where dozens of hungry vendors eagerly wait to take your money.
