Apgar Campground

I was impressed with Agpar considering that it is their largest and main campground. My site was in the A unit, which is the no generator/tent area. I did not have a tent and they did not but me for sleeping in my truck. It’s more a no RV area but vans and truck campers were allowed. Lots of people used tents and each site had an ample sized tent area — 16’ x 16’? The neighbors put up four personal tents on it. I was near a bathhouse with clean, flushing toilets but the shower were still closed (late May). Water access was a nearby well pump, and they prohibit doing dishes there and the only shared dish area was in another area so I used paper towel and burned them. I think it helps to buy firewood upon or before arrival as once parked it seemed rude to head out. Thankfully, someone had left some wood. My site had a table and pit about 20 feet set back from the parking, and it was suitable. Neighbors could be heard but were at least 40 feet off. Check in was fairly easy but is required even with the online reservation. I even had to show my confirmation on my phone since I had done it earlier in the day — they work from printed lists. The staff seem to be retirees and were all very friendly. You hear the rules in a short present, including the strict food storage rules. They do patrol on foot, evening and morning — though it’s not as strict as YNP where an unattended fire or cooler will get you on trouble with rangers!

Camp hosts were very nice, site was clean, campground quiet at night and I loved seeing and hearing kids riding their bikes and having fun.

Spot #D171 was nice but even with our short trailer 16' my wife had to back out of the spot as there was not enough clearance to pull out forward due to the angle of the exit. Other than that the spot was great and out time in the park was outstanding as usual.

Camp hosts were attentive. Checkin was super easy. The bathrooms were clean. The campsite was as expected. Everyone we met was helpful in guiding us to what we wanted. The campground was relatively quiet which was awesome. We talked to some of the road crew that are working to clear the roads. We were able to bike without cars. I love our national parks and all the employees who make them possible.

Space B100 needs a lot of work. I would recommend this spot to someone I dislike. It could at least be leveled out some!

I stopped at the visitor center and inquired at the help desk about any campsites that might be available for tonight. He told me that there were not and they would have to be booked months in advance. I walked away and opened up the recreation.gov site. There were over a dozen available sites at the Apgar Campground. Kudos to the APP! I booked a beautiful site. When I arrived, the woman and man rangers greeted me and were super nice and friendly. There was a nice bathroom facility, and potable water near by. Plenty of bike and walking paths. The lake and view of the majestic snowy mountains is breathtaking. There are some shops in walking distance and an Ice Cream store.

Very comfortable and convenient site with deer for the kids living there. Bike ride up to McGee Meadows on Camas road is great uphill ride to prepare for Going to the Sun. It is fairly quiet, at least compared to Going to the Sun.
