Valley of Fires Recreation Area

Lovely location. I stop there often. As night is empty to the west over the lava flow and just the twinkling lights of the little town of Carrizozo, 8 mi away against a range of hills. The showers are wonderful, the toilets as clean as any I’ve ever used at a campground, with toilet paper and hand sanitizer in the pit toilet. The campground host was wonderful. The only two reasons my overall experience was not five stars were the weather - we picked a weekend when the wind blew at 45 mph for 48 hours - straight, and the leveling of the sites. The one we were in was far enough off level that we had to turn the motorhome around, which made running power cables, complicated and waterline impossible.

This is a lovely campground with great sites. The sites are nice and private and quiet. The one that I stayed at had enough space for one vehicle and did not allow open fires at the time. The spot for tents was approximately 12x12 and evenly filled with sand. The park host was friendly and helpful. Beautiful sunrise and sunsets.

The campsites were nicely laid out for privacy and also clean. Having water right at the tent sites was very convenient, and the pit toilets near the sites were clean and low odor. Great place to camp!

Great little campsite, showers were a bit of a hike from my spot, but very doable. There's also plenty of sites that are first in best dressed. So even if you don't have a reservation I'd go here if you can. Dinner at the Four Winds Crossroads is also great, super friendly.

Beautiful well mailed park. Host very friendly and helpful. Restrooms very clean.
