This BLM campground is also an attraction, with a boardwalk across the lava floes and interpretive signs. Unfortunately, some of the signs were so damaged by sun and weather as to be unreadable. It’d be nice if those were improved.
Signs said information to go with the boardwalk interpretive trail was available at the visitor’s center / office, but despite info that the center would be open during daytime hours, it was not.
One annoyance was an RVer who used the dump station parking for over an hour trying to get their car up onto a tow dolly and properly secured. We were able to get our small class B in to use the dump, but not fill fresh water. We remedied that by ducking into an open campsite.

Sites were well spaced with beautiful views. The campground is set on an island in the lava field. Its up on a hill giving beautiful views from all the RV sites. The tent sites are nestled down in the trees. We were on site 14 which only had water (no electricity) and was hard for us to pull into. I have a 30 ft trailer. It was also hard to level on this site. I would recommend any length less than 25 ft. The hostess was very friendly and answered all our questions about the area. Bathrooms and showers were kept very clean. Don’t skip the little 1 mi loop hike through the lava field. It’s paved so it’s an easy hike. It’s was interesting to see and read about all the plants and different movements of the lava. This was a great stay and if we are back in the area we will camp here again.

Stayed in spot #20 for 3 nights. Easy pull in and 50 amp service which was a pleasant surprise. Lots of places to hike. You can drive an hour to Alamogordo if you need supplies. Beautiful bathrooms with great showers. We will be back.

Recommended. I was in the best part of the park IMO. I was at Site 18. Plenty of space between sites up on a hill. I would not stay in the lower sites. Too close together. Sites 17, 18, and 19 are the best. Bathroom and showers were clean, but could use some maintenance. I would definitely stay again.
