About Valley of Fires Recreation Area

Valley of Fires recreation area is located immediately adjacent to the Malpais Lava Flow. Approximately 5,000 years ago, Little Black Peak erupted and flowed 44 mi into the Tularosa Basin, filling the basin with molten rock. The resulting lava flow is four to six miles wide, 160 ft thick and covers 125 square miles. The lava flow is considered to be one of the youngest lava flows in the continental United States.    The Bureau of Land Management maintains and manages the Valley of Fires Recreation area, which is located four miles west of Carrizozo, NM, on US Highway 380. Valley of Fires offers both camping and day use. 13 of the campsites have 30- and 50-amp electrical hookups and water hookups, all sites have picnic shelters, tables, trashcans and barbeque grills. Two of the RV sites are accessible, as are the restrooms. Showers are provided in the main restroom/shower house. An RV dump station is also available. Two group shelters are accessible and available for rental. The 3/4-mile Malpais Nature Trail offers a close-up look of the lava surface.

I had read recent reviews about the gnats so I will say that those were annoying. They got us on the morning we were packing up. Thankfully we went on a day that was windy and that helped keep them away so if you can I’d say try to come when it’s windy. Otherwise the view was gorgeous, the walking path was perfect, the restrooms were clean and the staff was helpful. We will be going back again—keeping in mind the weather to not get rained on but to go when theres wind to keep the gnats away.

The scenery, location and campground was beautiful but there were so many gnats swarming that we left earlier than planned basically fleeing the area. If it weren't for the gnats I would've rated the place 5 stars but we actually couldn't even function without them getting in our eyes and ears it was basically a cloud of gnats surrounding us which was terrible.

Nice clean park. Variety of sites for different sized rigs. Only about 15% of the sites occupied when I was there in early July. Good jump off point for multiple museums within an hour or so drive.
