About Juniper Campground (NM)

Juniper Family Campground is the ideal place to camp on the Pajarito Plateau. Located just inside the main park entrance, the campground is a short drive from the Bandelier Visitor Center, the Frijoles Canyon Shuttle bus system (mid-May to mid-October), and the adjacent towns of Los Alamos and White Rock. Juniper Family Campground is the perfect "home base" to explore the Pajarito Plateau, Jemez Mountains, and all of north central New Mexico!   The campground is divided into 3 loops: Abert's Squirrel Loop (Loop A) campsites are available year-round as first-come, first serve only. Pay for first-come, first-serve campsites at the self-pay kiosk located at the Juniper Family Campground or in-person at the Bandelier Visitor Center during business hours.  Black Bear Loop (Loop B) campsites are open year-round and are reservable up to 6 months in advance. Some sites may open on shorter booking windows (7 or 14 days in advance or the day of arrival).  Coyote Loop (Loop C) campsites are open seasonally, March 1 – October 31, and are reservable up to 6 months in advance. Some sites may open on shorter booking windows (7 or 14 days in advance).  You may also book campsite reservations in Loops B & C on the day of arrival (subject to availability). HOWEVER, cell service/data is not always reliable in the park and no public WiFi is available. The park highly recommends booking your reservation from the neighboring towns of Los Alamos and White Rock before heading to Bandelier.   Group campsites (in Loop A) are available by reservation only up to 12 months in advance until the day before arrival (subject to availability). Same day reservations are not available for group campsites.

Very nice spots for RV boondocking. Water is not close to sites & might need up to 4 hoses to refresh tank, or carry bottles back n forth to add water if your stay is longer than 2 days or to have handy for campfire. Clean restrooms/good lighting & dish washing sink. Well manicured grounds. Food lockers substantial to protect from Bears. >Bears & rattlers active.< Picnic table & fire pits large areas behind each parking/camping lot very spacious! Dump station adequate but pull-through narrow. About 3 miles from visitor center. Evenings very quiet for 10 occupied spaces near us.

This was our second visit to Juniper CG, Coyote Lp specifically. I’d like to give our experience a 5 star review as the CG itself is really nice, with good amenities and site layouts, as well as a wonderful visitor center and hiking options. . However, it is time the parks get onboard with generator loops, and non-generator loops, or at the very least, short generator hours for 2 hours am, and then 2 hours pm. A few very large rigs squeezed in Coyote and were allowed to run their generators for 12 hours non-stop. Not only it’s the noise, it’s inhaling the smelly fumes all day. Most people come to camp in these parks to get away from city noise and traffic fumes and enjoy nature. A big rig next to us left his generator running even when they were not around at all, all day. It really spoiled the vibe for us. Also, it took 2 days to get soap in pthe women’s restroom even after we mentioned to the host it had been empty all that day. The restroom floor in Coyote was littered with toilet paper scraps and forest litter the entire week we were there. Men’s too. Other than those two gripes, we thought the CG was very nice. The shade in Coyote was a welcome relief on the hotter days. Water spigots had good pressure, and the trash was emptied regularly. The sani-dump was kept clean as well. Could have been a 5 star if not for allowing generators to run for 12 hours, and not having a loop designated “no generators”.

Nice campground. Bathrooms were very clean and also heated, which felt great since it was cold the day I was there. Great view of the dunes from the campground as well.

Juniper Campground was nicely appointed and maintained. Tent sites, unsurprisingly, tend to be sun-exposed. Bandelier Nat'l Monument was an unexpected treat, with its sightseeing among cliff dwellings and other insights into the history of this region.

We had a lovely and peaceful campsite in early October when the weather was just perfect. We’d love to go back!
