There was minimal shade on the Black Bear Loop. The bathrooms were very clean, and there was a dishwashing station with hot water.
The visitor center and surrounding trails were very good.

Clean bathrooms and convenient water points made this very comfortable for us as tent campers. Fairly low number of sites in each loop. Firm level site with semi-compacted pea gravel made for great tent set-up and staking. One thing to know: that there are no showers here. (For that, go into Los Alamos to the YMCA where guests can get a $5 shower.) We were in the Coyote Loop which has a less arid feel, which we preferred. Some of the sites have nice shade, others very little. Just pay attention to what you want and look at the photos for the sites, and even looking at the Google maps street view. This campground is a convenient location for access to the visitor center and anthropological sites there, and also to the mountain hiking in the NW part of the monument. Our four nights here will be remembered for life.

Very clean campground, clean bathrooms and lots of water access. Phone service is spotty, better in the canyon. Hiking trails awesome, start early because it gets hot!
