About Tetilla Peak

Tetilla Peak Recreation Area is located in Sandoval County, New Mexico, within the boundaries of the Pueblo de Cochiti Indian Reservation. The lake offers two public recreation areas: Cochiti on the west side of the lake and Tetilla Peak on the east side. Both sides offer spectacular scenic views of the water and surrounding mountains. The Cochiti Dam is one of the ten largest earth-fill dams in the United States, and also one of the largest in the world. The lake derives its name from the Indian Pueblo on the Cochiti Reservation.

Many visitors appreciated the spacious and well-maintained campsites, as well as the good water supply. Wonderful view, quiet, nice campsites (in the main loop, inner sites are the largest), good w/e. A little out of the way and in spots, you’ll find some ruff patches. If you like the solitude of boondocking, you’ll like this.

This campground is not for people who want privacy, it is on top of a low butte overlooking a lake with very little scrub brush so you’ll see all your neighbors. However the views - especially the sunsets and sunrises are spectacular. And when I visited, early September the weather was great - sunny, mid 70s with a steady, cool breeze.
Only thing I was not so happy with was the lack of any sign of the hosts. No checking in/ going over rules, no verifying everyone there had paid, no notices/posting of which spots were already reserved. Very lackadaisical - unless there didn’t happen to be hosts?

Beautiful and quiet campground! The water hookup wasn't too tasty, and the sites could've used a bit of trimming. But the view of the lake and peaceful dark skies made up for it.

Very affordable, especially if you are an America the Beautiful pass holder. Campground is not maintained as well as it should be but you can't beat the views, tranquility, and price. Our site manager, Mike, was attentive and responsive to our needs. As long as you can deal with no sewer/having to use the dump station every few days or so and the goathead thorns, it's a good deal. Road leading to the park has a lot of potholes but I would absolutely stay here again.

Area was great. The road to get there was horrible and was charged full price with no water. Got an email the day before saying no water was available as they were working on the water. Trying to get a hold of someone through rec.gov is nearly impossible to switch site.

This is the campground to come to when you want peace and quiet. Not much to do, and has seen better days, but I enjoy the quiet.

The bathhouse, roadway, and other features seem to have been abandoned some time ago. The bathrooms were locked and the doors and windows to the showers and the doors mechanical spaces were open, allowing the elements and birds to visit. This is a beautiful spot—particularly in the evening—with stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains on all sides.
