About Tetilla Peak

Tetilla Peak Recreation Area is located in Sandoval County, New Mexico, within the boundaries of the Pueblo de Cochiti Indian Reservation. The lake offers two public recreation areas: Cochiti on the west side of the lake and Tetilla Peak on the east side. Both sides offer spectacular scenic views of the water and surrounding mountains. The Cochiti Dam is one of the ten largest earth-fill dams in the United States, and also one of the largest in the world. The lake derives its name from the Indian Pueblo on the Cochiti Reservation.

Even though the campground was populated (we were there over Labor Day weekend) we felt like we had enough privacy. The site we had (Chol 29) was very accommodating for backing our 32 ft travel trailer in and was quite level. We went to the swim beach on the other side of the lake but found out that you cannot have pets there (Our daughters family have a dog) so we had to swim at the boat launch area. There is a 10 mi entrance road which is 35 mph and has a few potholes, so there is no quick run to a store. Tent Rocks is also near by - about a 40 minute drive.

This campsite is perfect for those who want to take in stunning views, unwind, and enjoy the nearby lake for fishing or boating. Summers can be hot and windy, but if you’re ready for it, it’s no big deal. I stayed at Site 19, which had incredible views from my camper shell. Unfortunately, the spot was scattered with cigarette butts that I ended up picking up. It seems some smokers love Site 19, but tossing their butts on the ground is disrespectful to the land and future visitors. Aside from that, the experience was amazing—clean bathrooms, peaceful grounds, and easy lake access made it fantastic.

Parking in space 2 was a challenge because of the angle of the amenities. Would have been better if we had chosen a different site.

The camp site is level. The view of the mountains is awesome. Beautiful sunsets and the stars are spectacular. You get a view of the lake and the overlook is a short distance from the site. I never saw an attendant but everything was clean and well cared for. You are a distance from anything so be sure you have everything you need when you get here.

The campground location is simply gorgeous! The views are spectacular and the sites are really great. The one and only thing that was a challenge was the condition of the bathhouses. They were really dark (lights on only at night) and in need of a good cleaning. We would go back for sure since we have a rig that allows us to avoid the bathhouse.
