Tetilla Peak

We had a great time our only problem was we didn’t have water for a whole day

The campground location is simply gorgeous! The views are spectacular and the sites are really great. The one and only thing that was a challenge was the condition of the bathhouses. They were really dark (lights on only at night) and in need of a good cleaning. We would go back for sure since we have a rig that allows us to avoid the bathhouse.

Great place and clean campsite's.

Super quiet, and rather secluded. We didn’t see any grounds workers, so as long as you’re okay fending for yourself with no park service or camp host, then this is the place to be! Little bit on an ant problem, but it is nature…bathrooms are VERY retro. Zero upkeep with the times, or just in general. Very vintage.

We enjoyed our time here but it is not fancy and is in need of some updating. We did not use the bathrooms but overheard people talking that the lights weren’t working earlier in the day. No hosts that we saw but we didn’t need them. We would stay here again.

The lake was closed due to a drowning. So had to go somewhere else. Would like to get a refund on my reservation

I had originally reserved a campsite in the Coyote loop, which had been advertised as a non-electric site that could accommodate either tent or trailer camping. When I got there, the sites were actually walk-in tent sites, and most of the sites were missing their number markings. In general, the area looked like it wasn't being maintained and things were falling apart.

I ended up making a new reservation in the Cholla electric loop. It was much better than the Coyote loop and the sites were well-maintained. However, there was no camp host available, at least while I was there.

Cancelling my original reservation wasn't possible on the website or through the call center, which was pretty frustrating. It doesn't make sense to me, since otherwise the website seems very user-friendly. The call center rep was able to submit a cancellation/partial refund request and gave me the contact info for the park ranger office that would take care of the refund for me. Even when I called the office, I wasn't able to speak with the individual who could take care of the refund, but the office rep that I spoke with was friendly and did pass the message on. It took about a week and a half before my refund request was finally processed, but I have received the email confirmation that the refund is processing.

Overall, the system seems inefficient, but everyone I spoke with was very nice and professional. And in the end, everything worked out and I was able to camp at a better site, so overall it was a good experience.

This is one of the families favorite camping areas. It may be a little far from the water, but Tetilla Peak is quieter and nice if you have younger kids. There isn’t the constant vehicle traffic, whereas safer for kids to play around camp areas.

I love how quiet and 'under the radar' this campground is, am very appreciative of the recently replaced electrical hookups across the campground and the good water supply and pressure. But be very careful as you make the turn from NM 16 onto Tetilla Peak Road, there is a 100 yard stretch of old, deteriorating asphalt that is flat-out dangerous. My last visit, it cost me a $300 tire when I swerved to miss a nasty pothole with my front tire but caught it with the rear and ripped a big hole in the sidewall. The rest of the road past this section used to be almost as bad, but I can see where recent patching has been done to make it much better.

While Tetilla Peak Campground has an excellent view of Cochiti Lake from the east side, the access is more remote than Cochiti Lake Campground. Not a problem, just be aware. It's a 10-mile trip after you turn off Highway 16 onto Tetilla Peak Rd. The campground is rustic dirt/gravel roads, but our site was clean and fairly level with a shady ramada over a stone table. There are water spigots at each site with good pressure and our site (#16) had 30A and 50A power available. There is also a restroom/shower building with actual flush toilets (not pit). Campground was quiet, a very good dark-sky environment and it seems to be not as much in demand (reservation-wise) as Cochiti Lake. There is also lake access and boat ramp at the campground. We will definitely return!
