Black Canyon Campground offers a beautiful, well-maintained environment with clean facilities and friendly hosts, making it a favorite among visitors. Many enjoyed the peaceful setting, abundant wildlife, and proximity to Santa Fe, with ample hiking opportunities. However, the lack of water access and some maintenance issues have been noted as drawbacks.

Really enjoyed it with my family of 7. Wilderness but close enough to town that we used it instead of hotels!
Would be nice if the water was working but we made do
Pro tip- camp away from the toilets. Convenient to be close, but may smell it if downwind

They have done a lot of forest work around the campground and taken down some of the large trees that provide shade on the sites. Perhaps they were diseased? Clean as always. Some day there will be water! Plan ahead and bring what you need.
Still one of my favorite campgrounds. Always clean, including the pit toilets and easy access to town.

The campsite was beautiful and it was wonderful having a trailhead at the top of the campground. It was also fantastic being so close to town, so we could enjoy all that the Santa Fe area has to offer. However, it seemed like the campground in general isn't maintained very well or very regularly -- there were multiple dated signs that appeared to be at least three years out of date, the water spigots had clearly not been working for a while despite having signs on them saying that the issue was being addressed, and there was an overall feeling of neglect. That being said, the beauty of the site and the proximity to town made up for all of that and I would definitely camp here again.

Nice, clean campsite, definitely helped to get out of the heat. However, the toilets needed to be cleaned. We understand that pumping out the latrines happens in a timely manner, but the actual seat needs to be regularly cleaned. Ghastly!
Overall we would do this campsite again because it the site itself was clean and easy to get to, lovely surroundings but please consider cleaning more.

This campground has turned into a dog park, many, many dogs, and a lot of walk through local dog traffic, and local hiking groups with multiple dogs walking through. Lots of dog refuse. Also dogs off leashes, dogs barking, dogs fighting, dogs barking all night. A lot of parks have a daily fee per animal, this might be a solution. Another solution is to cut a trail from the public parking to the trails that does not cut through the camping area.
Aside from the kennel issue: this park has NO WATER, the dump station at the State park is available for $10, but the ranger station is rarely open so bring a check and drop it in the box.

The campground was amazing. In a close proximity to Santa Fe. Great hikes, right from the campground. Loved everything about it. We definitely will be back!
