Black Mountain Campground

We have been going there for many many years . The host are very nice and helpful. The bath houses are very clean … there are hiking trails to walk on . There’s a waterfall you can hike to very easily . It borders the Toe River where kids and adults enjoy playing in . There’s a hiking trail from the campground you can hike up to Mt Mitchell . It’s a primitive camp ground and people from all around comes to camp .

A beautiful mountain setting. The hosts are very helpful. There’s plenty to see and do in the area.

It was a bit colder than we expected, so if you camp in May make sure you bring warm clothes(i.e. layers).

Great campground and facilities! Hiking Mt. Mitchell is incredible! Beautiful hike and not the only one accessible from this spot. We also did Setrock Falls and the Lower River Loop. We want to come back and do more hikes that we didn't know about previously!
Do be careful of bears, we had the pleasure of seeing a mom with two cubs!

Great, private campground, very clean facilities. Quiet and peaceful

Very clean, quiet campground with bathrooms and showers easily accessible from every site. Abundant hiking nearby and 10 minutes from the Parkway.

This campground we so wonderful. Many spots to choose from and a big grassy field in the middle to play volleyball. In the morning we hiked to mount Mitchell right from the campground which was a very tough but rewarding hike. All the facilities were extremely clean and the fire ring and picnic table were in good condition.

Campground was perfect! Surrounded by beautiful forest, the scenic South Toe River, and only a short hike from a waterfall, Black Mountain Campground couldn't be beat! The bathrooms were clean, the showers were hot, and the people were kind and helpful. Overall a perfect camping experience for a couple of Clevelanders enjoying a mountain getaway!

We had a wonderful time! Diane and some of the other hosts were very nice! The only complaint we have is that the hosts were told to let all of the groups from Briar Bottom Group Camp to come down to the campground and take showers because they don’t have showers at the group camp. They would bring truck loads of people down to the campground for them to take showers all at one time and we couldn’t get into the shower when we needed to. Could you please have them build a shower house for the group camp? We have camped at Black Mtn Campground for over 40 years with family and friends and that is the only complaint that we have ever expressed to the forest service.

The lead hosts of this campsite or toxic people and they have driven out all of the locals. I have provided my input to management on their behavior and how it is driving away the regulars but nothing has changed. It's not safe and it's not maintained. The hosts do not ever check on campers to make sure all is well. This is really important when you are so far from the main roads and they have fully restricted internet usage. You have to walk for miles to get a message for help. During Memorial Day there was a gunshot inside the campground. The hosts were told it was a bottle in the fire but everyone around it said no way it was a gun shot. The people were not removed. I felt very unsafe. Vagrants come into the camp to shower and no one tells them to leave. People run generators all day and no one tells them not to. People drive 30 mph through the loop and no one stops them. The lead hosts pick and chose what rules to apply to whom and unfortunately they impose bogus rules on good people and then let their friends stay for free!

I would not recommend this campground to anyone wiht the current onsite manager/hosts. It is unsafe and an unhappy place.
