The camp host, Joe, and his wife were amazing. I’ve never had cleaner facilities or more welcoming activities. They really took great care of the campground. Hwy 80 into the area is pretty tough and not recommended for trailers. There’s easy access to a lot of great hikes and the river is right next to the camp ground for fishing. There’s a slight micro climate that lends toward wetter weather than the lower elevations so it is best to be prepared for some precipitation. It is a heavy bear area so be prepared to store food in a locked car.

Great spot on South Toe River for fishing and hiking. Great access to Mt Mitchell trail. Bring your bear spray- we saw quite a few.

The hosts were great, place was very well kept. Everyone was helpful and friendly. Very close to some great hiking trails.

Enjoyed staying there. However the signage to get there was horrible and the roads were so busted up we were only able to drive 10 mph. The hosts were pleasant and helpful and the bathhouse was very clean.

Wonderful campground, late October weather with fall colors at their most glorious. Nighttime skies ablaze with stars and the glow of the milky way across the zenith. Great hiking options, helpful friendly staff, amphitheater and large open commons area for playing and watching the sky at night. River sites are closed due to storm damage in Aug of 2021. Campground in serious need of updating with electricity on more sites. Campground sees heavy usage all season long so best to reserve a site before you come.

Tent camped for two nights this fall and had a wonderful stay. Campground is adjacent to Mt. Mitchell summit trail which let us start our summit hike right from our camp. The campsite is well kept and the bathroom / showers are very clean and well maintained. There was firewood for sale at the campground which was very much appreciated as we used more than anticipated.
Overall this was a great experience!

From Asheville, North Carolina, take I-26 west to exit 9 onto 19 east towards Burnsville. Follow 19 to Micaville and turn right onto Highway 80. Continue south approximately 12-14 miles to Mount Mitchell Golf Course. Turn right on South Toe River Road and follow signs to Black Mountain Campground.
Black Mountain Campground is accessible via I-26 and US Highway 19. From I-26, take exit 9 onto US 19 east towards Burnsville.
