Cape Point Campground sites have a shortened reservation window. Due to the ground saturation and potential for flooding we encourage you to check the sites prior to paying. Cape Point Campground is centrally located to all of the attractions on Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The campground puts you within walking distance of arguably the best fishing and surfing on the east coast.

The traffic heading to South Beach invades the camp ground. These 'day users' take advantage of showers and baths and drive wrong way on one way and speed. It creates a very insecure and unsettling atmosphere since no one really knows who this people are.

I spent two week nights at Cape Point campground, which was virtually empty and therefore very quiet. It’s a flat, treeless campground, well maintained, not necessarily as close to the beach as other campgrounds in the Outer Banks, (but there are several ways to access the beach so it’s not a big deal). Be sure to take bug spray—whatever bites out there leaves itchy welts and, to my dismay, Benadryl didn’t quite do the trick. Also, because the campground is comparatively inland, the area was very, very warm, humid, and airless. I’d camp there again, but probably not in July!

Because of the flooding problems the 200+ campsites rarely experience more than 20-25 campers at the peak time. It is, of course, on a first-come-first-serve basis for campsite selection and then registration and payment following. There are relatively few bugs. In four nights sitting under the stars, I got two mosquito bites. I believe the wind there and close location to the ocean keeps it this way. I get more mosquito bites cutting my lawn one afternoon than in four days and nights at Cape Point. Restrooms are always clean and well maintained also.

Not far from the ocean, so sleeping in a tent was an awesome experience as you were put to sleep by the sounds of it. excellent bathrooms, and the stars were incredible.

This campground is a secret gem! We stayed Fourth of July week and it was not full. The bugs were fine and the sites spacious. The bathrooms and bathhouses are very clean. The showers are cold but in July in the OBX they were a blessing!

Seriously the best bargain for staying on the OBX in the summer and the stars were amazing!!

Only complaints are that the grass needed to me mowed badly on our site— it was down while we were staying- and the beach was kind of a far walk. Otherwise perfect

Policies & Rules

General

  • The campground is in a low lying area that floods easily after a heavy rain. Reservations may be canceled with limited notice.
  • Camping is limited to a total of 14 days of camping between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Making reservations under another name or account to circumvent the 14 day restriction is prohibited.
  • Generators must be turned off during quiet hours.
  • Wood fires are not permitted in the campground. Only charcoal cooking fires are permitted in a grill, stove or other self-contained unit.
  • A fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other materials including, but not limited to, flammable liquids, garbage, fireworks, plastics, aerosol canisters, batteries, or other manufactured or synthetic materials, is prohibited.
  • There is a limit of 6 persons per site, a maximum of 2 cars, or 1 car and 1 trailer, and a maximum of two tents.
  • Pets are welcome but must be on a 6' leash at all times. Electronic collars are not considered a leash. Pet excriment must be picked up and disposed of in trash recepticles.
  • Biting insects are prevalent in the summer months, therefore netting and repellent are recommended.
  • All equipment must fit on the site pad; large RVs over 25 feet may have to park second vehicles in auxiliary parking away from the campground, or purchase an additional campsite. Vehicles cannot park on the grass.
  • All campsites are exposed and subject to weather extremes. There are no shaded sites in the campground.
  • The Access Pass and both the Senior Annual and Senior Lifetime Pass are the only passes that provide a discount on the fee for the campsite physically occupied by the pass owner, not to any additional campsite(s) occupied by members of the pass owner's party. The discount does not apply to utility hookups. The pass discount must be applied at the time of the reservation; it cannot be applied retroactively.
