I really enjoyed my visit this year. I was able to choose an ideal tent campsite this year. Not all campsites are ideal for tent camping. My first time tent camping here in 2020 wasn’t ideal—the site was more suited to RVS. But I walked around the campground and observed sites that are much better for tent camping. And this year I got a great spot.

Sites are close together but fairly close to the beach. Shower is just cold water. Never saw a campsite host.

The sand spurs were out of control. My dog suffered several and multiple incidents causing us to have to leave after one night. Pease let people know on the web site.

Great stay at Frisco. Fresh water is available at Oregon Inlet Fishing Center or the Lighthouse road to the Buxton CG. Maybe the spigots at Frisco are still working during the summer but were shut off in October. Sites do provide some wind protection, unlike Buxton. Cactus and sand spurs were abundant at our site.

The campsites are great, lots of privacy. Local seafood is fantastic. Weather was perfect, October is the best time to be at Hatteras. Yoga class just outside the park on M, W and F. My only complaint is that the female ranger drove around with a black and blue American flag flying from her golf cart. No wonder everyone camping there was white. No one of color is welcome.

"pull-through" campsite was too close to the road on a blind curve. Traffic would pass by dangerously close and at speed. Not a suitable site.

North (From Richmond, VA)
Follow I-95 South to Richmond, VA. Take I-64 East toward Norfolk/Virginia Beach, VA. Take I-64 or I-664 to Chesapeake, VA. From I-64, take Exit 291B to Route 168, the Chesapeake Expressway (a toll-road costing $3.00 - $6.00 each way). Once in North Carolina, Route 168 turns into US-158 East. Follow US-158 East through Nags Head, NC to the junction of NC-12 South. Continue on NC-12 South through the villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, and Buxton. Once you reach Frisco take a left on Billy Mitchell Road and proceed to the campground.
West (From Rocky Mount, NC)
Follow US-64 East through Tarboro, Williamston, Plymouth, Columbia, and Manteo, crossing the Alligator River Bridge and the Virginia Dare Bridge. Keep going on US-64 East to Nags Head, NC, going over the Washington Baum Bridge, to the junction of NC-12 South. Turn right onto NC-12 South and you will be at the north entrance to Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Continue on NC-12 South through the villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, and Buxton. Once you reach Frisco take a left on Billy Mitchell Road and proceed to the campground.
South (From Florence, SC)
Take I-95 North to Wilson, NC. Take US-264 East through Greenville, NC and Washington, NC. From Washington, NC, take US-17 to Williamston and follow US-64 East to Nags Head, NC and the junction of NC-12 South. (For an alternate route to NC-12 South, continue on I-95 North to Rocky Mount, NC. Take US-64 East through Tarboro, Williamston, Plymouth, Columbia, and Manteo, crossing the Alligator River Bridge and the Virginia Dare Bridge. All equipment must fit on the site pad, large RVs over 25 feet may have to park second vehicles in auxiliary parking away from the campground, or purchase an additional campsite. Parking on the grass is prohibited. |
