Peaceful and pleasant place to stay at! Water in cabin was clean and drinkable, with consistent pressure and heat the entire time. Overhead lights in the cabin are low wattage LEDs, and can be run with only a small battery pack, if you don't want to bring a bulky generator. Beach is only a minute's walk from this cabin, down a sand road, with plenty of wind and waves, birds and fish, and good shelling as well. Do heed the advice to bring bug repellant and long sleeve shirts, the dune flies can be a bit dense until you get out to the ocean side of things. Overall, its a fun adventure to a barrier island, well worth the opportunity to go.

I appreciate the efforts NPS puts into CALO. The thing I really miss out there is when they had the old light in the lighthouse. It would really light up your tent at night.

Amazing location- weβre still reeling by the beauty of the area! The volunteers and local ranger were incredibly helpful and welcoming. The cabin was as advertised- we didnβt realize there would be generator hookups (wouldnβt have affected anything but maybe on a longer visit weβd look at one!)
Cannot recommend this gem enough. Already planning another trip back!!!!

Pros: 1- Hot water worked in shower and kitchen.....occasionally correctly. 2- Gas Stove worked.....this time. 3- Light sockets worked....this time. Last time the bathroom light socket was corroded so bad it would not work. Cons: 1- Not enough places to hang jackets, fishing waders, and rain gear inside or outside. 2- Paper towel dispenser was broken. 3- No shelves in bathroom for toiletries. 4- No hooks for pans/pots near stove - in the past this always existed. 5- Missing shelving on right side wall near stove. This is for groceries, oil and such pantry items. All cabins had this in the past. 6- Why isn't there a light on the porch? Of all places, after a day fishing, it would at least be nice to have a light in the porch area to find food in the cooler and to change out of waders or beach gear.

The cabin was fine everything was nice and clean! We had lots of fun, driving up and down the beach and finding so many shells. The weather was not very cooperative, but we made the best of it. Weβre going to do it again this will be our third time.

We (family of four, two kids ...4 and 6...) recently enjoyed a two-night stay at the Great Island Cabins during the opening weekend of spring. Luckily, the lack of bugs made for a pleasant experience, despite the chilly weather. We were blessed with sunshine throughout, with only brief showers one evening.
The cabins exceeded our expectations, impressing even my "non-camping" wife. The comfortable mattresses ensured a good night's sleep, although some window coverings would have been appreciated for a darker atmosphere in the mornings. Nonetheless, a bit of improvisation with duct tape and trash bags did the trick. Bring an extra table so you have sufficient space to prep or clean up for meals.
All amenities, including toilets, showers, stove, and hot water, were in excellent condition. However, be sure to bring a generator to power the cabin, whether it's a large electric battery or gas-powered. The generator dog house conveniently provides wiring for 110 power. Ice and gasoline are available for purchase on-site, and the drive to the lighthouse was nothing short of amazing.
We were somewhat unprepared for the energy consumption of driving in the sand, especially in our electric car, which used three to four times more energy than usual. Special thanks to Carlos for lending us a generator to recharge and make it back to the mainland and continue our exploration of the outer banks.
For future visits, we plan to bring our own gas generator, as driving on the beach was an absolute blast and something we don't want to skimp out on. Additionally, the experience has sparked an interest in fishing that we're eager to explore further.
It would be beneficial for locals or the ferry service to consider offering generator rentals for visitors like us who prefer not to haul one on a lengthy road trip. Overall, our stay was fantastic, and we look forward to returning. Places like this won't be around for forever - enjoy it while you still can.
