About Great Island Cabin Camp

Great Island Cabin Camp sits on South Core Banks within Cape Lookout National Seashore, just off the North Carolina coast. This historic, remote camp has long been a favorite destination for fishermen and beachgoers. Because it is only accessible by water, visitors arrive either by personal boat or by reserving space on one of the vehicle ferries that cross scenic Core Sound to South Core Banks.4WD, high-clearance vehicles are strongly recommended due to deep sand on the Back Road and along the oceanside beaches. There are no paved roads on South Core Banks. An Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Driving Permit is required and must be purchased on Recreation.gov before your trip. Upon arrival, present your proof of purchase to staff at the Great Island Cabin Camp Office, and they will issue the appropriate decal for your vehicle.

Cabin 3 was great other than the shower and water pressure. It was either freezing cold or burn your flesh off hot. We used the main camp showers after our first night experience until the hot water went out in those. Other than that, everything was wonderful! Nice cabin, beautiful view, nice staff, and absolutely wonderful place to be!

Cabins are worth every penny as weather on the island can go from beautiful to brutal very quickly.

The Davis Ferry service was awesome. Even bringing over items needed, however the park service nor the volunteers would accept or place at cabin (less then 900 feet away) items that were brought over. These items had to be left at dock until we returned from the lighthouse. We rent several cabins at a time multiple times a year, simple customer service of placing items at the volunteer office or cabins should be expected.

South Core Banks is a rugged, windswept, and austere landscape. The Great Island Cabins are plain without electricity, linens, or any kitchen supplies, but they do have good hot water, flush toilet, and working stove.
We don't use a generator--we want to hear the ocean and the birds. The only thing you can buy on the island is bait and ice. Bring everything you need including bug spray and sunscreen.
If you like an isolated, rustic place, you will be happy. I have come here many times over many years, though it takes a lot of prep, and in recent years, it's even more trouble because I'm now 12 hours away. Worth it, but I like this undeveloped island.
