About Great Island Cabin Camp

Great Island Cabin Camp sits on South Core Banks within Cape Lookout National Seashore, just off the North Carolina coast. This historic, remote camp has long been a favorite destination for fishermen and beachgoers. Because it is only accessible by water, visitors arrive either by personal boat or by reserving space on one of the vehicle ferries that cross scenic Core Sound to South Core Banks.4WD, high-clearance vehicles are strongly recommended due to deep sand on the Back Road and along the oceanside beaches. There are no paved roads on South Core Banks. An Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Driving Permit is required and must be purchased on Recreation.gov before your trip. Upon arrival, present your proof of purchase to staff at the Great Island Cabin Camp Office, and they will issue the appropriate decal for your vehicle.

We stayed in Cabin 5 for 3 nights in May. The cabin was clean, and everything functioned properly. The volunteers and park staff were also very accommodating.
We spent our days fishing from one end of the island to the other. The bite was slow, but we managed enough for a couple meals.
It was nice to have a solid place to get out of the wind, take a shower and eat at the end of each day. We carried a small generator, which is nice, but we could have easily managed without one with some portable back-up power supplies to recharge our devices.
The island is a special place. We are looking forward to our fall trips in October.

It’s hard to complain when I’m this close to the water! We were in Cabin 3 and the location is great. Gas was $6 a gallon and ice was about $5 per bag. Completely reasonable-it’s an island. The staff was great with our kids. It’s totally worth going down to the point past the light house. We went in July and brought an ac. We didn’t last year.

The only reason for 4 stars is that the cabin wasn’t clean. It smelled. The trash can lid was covered on both sides with rotted food and mold. The shower has a good amount of sand in it and the stove was just dirty. We gave the inside a decent cleaning and added cleaners to our list for next time.

    • Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
  • Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
