Had a great time and spent most of it on the beach. Went clamming on the inside and thus had a nice seafood dinner. Good thing you can get ice at the office as it was pretty hot the whole time we were there. Only problem was that there were three days of wind at about 18 to 20 knots. Tough for an umbrella but we shielded ourselves with our truck.

My wife and I bring our shepherd every year, sometimes more than once. Friendly, helpful rangers and volunteers on the island, and a great ferry experience as well. Cabins are clean, maintained, and the there is nothing like the experience of sleeping just feet from both the Atlantic and the Sound! Peace, nature, sunsets, and an experience like no other.

The cabins, eh, they are in a bit of disrepair. But if you in for an epic adventure on the island and not looking for luxurious accommodations, you’ll love it. Bring disposable tablecloths, a bathmat for the shower and don’t expect much for the cabins, it’ll be fine. It was my 3rd trip and I plan on coming back every year. The 4x4 beaches, the shells, the stars, it’s all a little piece of NC paradise.

We loved our experience at Great Island. The cabins were stocked with more amenities than I was expecting (paper towels, trash bags, toilet paper, brooms) and it was in better shape than I was expecting. We are excited to visit again!

We stayed during the hottest time of year. We brought a window AC unit and a generator. It took a night or so to cool down the cabin, but in a cooler month that would likely not be an issue. The beach was beautiful and remote, but swim at your own risk and watch your kids like a hawk. We packed in all of our food but beware, there are a lot of ants, and lots of places for them to get in the cabin. They will get in. Bring all food in sealed containers and don't leave anything out overnight.
We will likely be back, but the trip definitely takes a lot of prep work and work while staying here to be comfortable. If a remote, pristine, untouched beach with no one for miles is your thing, its worth it.

We had planned to camp on the beach here. We had packed appropriately. When we came off the ferry, we were offered a cabin. We checked it out and it really was a step up from camping on the beach ! Water and a bed.
Our next visit will include more water, the water wasn’t great for drinking.
Also, more than one battery fan or maybe a generator, but we were fine with a lantern this visit. The wind was 30mph and although it was nice to keep the heat down, the sand pelted us.
We will come back with a few more accommodations, but seclusion is our
Jam! And my husband and 4 kids and I really enjoyed ourselves for a 4 day stay

Rustic cabins. Great location. Shelling is amazing. We always bring a fan to deal with the overnight heat. Some bugs in the cabin but otherwise great experience.

Cancellation policy
- Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
- Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
- Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
- Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
- Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
- Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
- Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
Fires & fuel
- Guests should obtain firewood locally and burn it on-site to protect forests; transporting firewood is illegal in some states.
