About Harmon Den Campground

Harmon Den Campground is nestled on a mountainside beneath a forest of mixed hardwoods in the Pisgah National Forest. The camp is in a secluded area off of Cold Springs rd. in Haywood County, and the individual sites provide ample privacy.   The upper loop is reserved for horse campers while the lower loop is reserved for tent camping and small trailers. There are no hookups, no dump station, and no drinking water at this time. There is a vault toilet facility for each camping loop as well as bear-proof garbage cans. The area trails are horse and hiking use only, NO bikes. The campground is an ideal base for exploring the miles of nearby trails and enjoying the beautiful mountain scenery, with nearby access to I-40, Max Patch, and Hot Springs, NC

What Guests Are Saying

Harmon Den Campground offers a quiet, clean, and well-maintained environment with shaded sites equipped with picnic tables, fire pits, and grill grates. Campers appreciated the wildlife sightings, including bears and elk, and the peaceful atmosphere despite some minor disturbances from construction nearby. Some challenges included confusing detour signs and a hornet issue at the entry gate, but overall, visitors enjoyed their stay and expressed a desire to return.

Was nice most of the stay, construction workers from I40 rebuilding were staying in a trailer 2 sites away. They left for a day and came back before dark, staying 45 minutes with there side by side running. Then left only to leave there generator running never cutting off till I left next day was annoying. Other than that was very peaceful.

Beautiful campground deep in the woods. Lots of nature to enjoy, heard many animals at night including owls, eagles/hawks, maybe even some coyotes. Would definitely consider going back if I get the chance.

The campground itself was good. The detour signs for exit 7 (detour to 15) were terrible and led to us driving for an extra hour.
When you get off at exit 15 the detour signs disappear so there in no indication which way to go. For anyone else that comes from the west going east, pass exit 7 for harmon den (its closed), get off at exit 15 and get back on i40 going west. The westbound exit 7 is open. Otherwise you will have to find the route through the back way up fines creek and max patch.

We camped here Tuesday through Saturday the week after July 4th and had a great experience. The campground was quiet, clean, and well-maintained. Every site had a picnic table, fire pit, and grill grate, and the sites were nicely shaded.
We tent camped in the lower loop at Site 17. The lower loop is laid out as a cul-de-sac, with bathrooms located at the bottom of the gravel road and bear-proof trash bins at both the top and bottom. Site 17 is toward the top of the road on the right side. It was plenty of space for two adults and a small dog. Site 19, which is the last site on the right at the bottom of the road, appeared larger and included two picnic tables.
Because the road slopes downhill, it was a short walk down to the bathrooms and a slightly longer walk back up to our site, but it wasn't a problem for us.
The lower and upper loops are fairly close together, but the campground was extremely quiet during our stay. We were the only campers there until Friday night, when another camper arrived in the upper loop.
We're familiar with the area, so the campground didn't feel too remote or secluded. Wildlife was definitely a highlight of the trip. We spotted a bear from a safe distance one day, an elk walked through our campsite after we had gone to bed one night, and we also saw a family of six elk—including two large adults—moving through the campground during the day.
We had enough cell service for phone calls, but not enough signal to use Wi-Fi or data consistently.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would happily camp here again.
