Cottonwood was a fantastic ending to our camping trip to several national parks. Campsite was flat with excellent views, restrooms were some of the cleanest weβd come across, and my kids were ecstatic to see bison and wild horses across the river from our campsite just an hour after our arrival.

A perfect spot to stay to explore Theodore Roosevelt National Park and Medora! We did not have hookups, but were glad for the RV water spigot near the entrance. There is no dump station, but we made it work for the amount of time we were there. We loved seeing the bison near the campground, but kept our distance. Driving to the North Unit was definitely worth it as was taking a Ranger-led hike one morning. Seeing the βTR - The Strenuous Lifeβ program in Medora was also fantastic!

Cottonwood campground was very pleasant and quiet. We tent-camp and were away from the big trailers. Had 2 bison in the grasslands just behind the tent area. Camp hosts were very welcoming and informative and we really enjoyed talking with them about their volunteerism in the park campground.
We hiked both the north and south units of Theodore Roosevelt National Park spending several days in each location. The north unit is more colorful due to the many diverse rock layers. We saw wildlife in both units, including the bison, too many prairie dogs to count, coyote, elk, the wild horses, pronghorns, mule deer, the black and white-tailed deer, with many of the sightings close (but from a still safe distance).
We've been to nearly 40 of our National Parks and this had beautiful scenery (as does all our national parks), easy driving, hiking for all skill levels, great wildlife, and low population. A wonderful trip for our 34th wedding anniversary.
