Cottonwood Campground (ND)

Quiet, peaceful campground. Foliage gives sites a good amount of privacy. Clean bathrooms. Although they weren’t around when I stayed, there was plenty of evidence that buffalo wander through frequently! My site (49) was just steps from the Little Missouri River and had beautiful views of the wild, open country.

The evening Interpretive program was very good. I was surprised at how nice the bathrooms were!

I really enjoyed our visit to Theodore Roosevelt NP and specifically found the camping experience to be even more pleasant than expected. We just had a simple tent and were at site 33 of the North loop. The site was well-shaded and pretty. There was a sense of privacy even though other campers were nearby. The restroom facilities were clean and reasonably convenient.
It's a lot of fun observing the prairie dogs in the park. My son and I were greatly entertained taking the hike through the prairie dog colony on the way to the Old East Entrance (at times the trail is within ten feet of the critters who often poked out of their holes to see what was going on), and we also found a shady spot just off the road near the visitor center to set up a couple of chairs and just sit and watch them for about an hour. There were dozens and perhaps one hundred or more visible from there.
Medora is a short drive from the campground and we enjoyed eating and playing some pickleball there in the evening.
The Visitor Center had some interesting history displays including an unusual rifle/shotgun combination Teddy Roosevelt had used, something I had no idea existed.
Overall it's a nice park to visit, I highly recommend. The weather in early June was just about perfect.
