About Scaredman Recreation Site

Reservations must be made 5 days prior to arrival. Disregard the "FF" (First-Come-First-Serve) availability. We do not allow on-site transactions. Off the beaten path, this minimally developed campground along Canton Creek features riverside picnic sites, drinking water spigots, and a vault restroom facility. Nearby, there are several outstanding undeveloped swimming holes along both Canton and Steamboat Creeks. Canton Creek and Steamboat Creek are closed to all angling. Just 3 miles downstream from Scaredman, the North Umpqua River offers world-class fly-fishing.

This is our favorite place to camp! Even when we just come up for the day, we always visit the area.

Bring the bug spray! The no-see-ems and yellow jackets were relentless on our August visit. There is no camp host, and our site had food waste in the fire pit, which surely contributed to the bug issue. It also has a boggy area where water runs off the mountain, which may have been a factor, as well. This is a primitive campground with no running water. The vault restrooms are frightening; you can smell them well before you get near, and going inside is a test of fortitude. On the plus side, the camp sites are large and mostly flat. There's plenty of room for a large tent and chairs. The little beach along the creek is the best you'll find. The water is surprisingly deep, yet has a shallow area for lounging or for smaller kids. We really like this campground and have stayed many times. Bring your own water and your own portable potty and you'll be happier.

The campsite was nice. We didn't enjoy the other campers that were fighting and decided to shot their guns off. It wasn't just one it was multiple rounds in the middle of the night while my kids were sleeping. We were ducking behind our cars because we weren't sure where the bullets were going. They need a camp host in this site. I was shocked Forrest service and the cops came and they tell the victims it would be better for them to leave and didn't tell the person who was shooting they had to leave. He put multiple people's lives at risk because of his poor choices. I'm not sure if any one was issued a citation. Not to mention the amount of garbage in the camp and at the water. I was taught leave a campsite better than what you found it, you can tell not many people have the same decency. So bring your garbage bags. Makes me sad because this used to be one of my favorite sites. We won't be back unless there is a camp host. So if you have little ones just think about that before choosing this place.

Nice campground but with no water the fees should drop significantly. The swimming hole is really nice.

This campground is sacred to many generations over several families…we care about the area and are happy to see it up in running again. Go explore the burned areas from the 2020 fire…Fall Creek Falls is amazing-so much to see that wasn’t visible before. Recommend going early morning or early evening due to no shade! The forest is regenerating and it’s awesome to see. Love this place. A meal at Steamboat should also be had-just make sure you make a reservation before leaving home!!
