About Tionesta Rec. Area Campground

Half of Forest County, where Tionesta Lake is located, is preserved as public lands. The region is known as one of Pennsylvania's best big game regions and is home to a remarkable variety of wildlife. Campers come to the Tionesta Recreation Area Campground to enjoy the forested area just below the Tionesta Dam. The area is ideal for fishing as well as scenic hiking. Tionesta is a culturally rich region with a long history. The Seneca Indian tribe named this area "where the water separates the land." Nearly a century ago, narrow gauge railways dotted the surrounding countryside, hauling out virgin timber from the hillsides.

We always enjoy TIONESTA! It was so nice to see that they cleaned up a lot of the brush and weeds throughout the campground. However, the new gravel on a few of the sites needs leveled out and raked better. Also, it would be nice if they updated some of the pipe fittings on the water supplies. Thank you for all you do!!

Very large, level campsite with an unexpected view of the water from the site. Ruger (our dog) approved. Easy access to attractions within the Allegheny National Forest. We shall return.

We always enjoy our camping visits to Tionesta campground; however, we frequently have to deal with uncut grass at the campsite which is not enjoyable, especially if it’s raining.

Park is clean and well kept. Sites are very nice, they are large with gravel parking and full hookup. Most sites are pretty level. The fire rings have an adjustable rack for cooking. The roads around the park are paved and smooth. The restrooms are kept clean but in need of updating. There is no control for the shower temperature, you get whatever temperature they have set it at and a single button that needs to be continuously pressed to keep the water running. Also, there is no family shower house, as there should be at a family campground. We spent 6 nights at this park and enjoyed the quiet, peaceful setting, the fresh air, the mountain views, and the sound of water flowing down the river at the rear of our site. This is a really nice place to camp and the town of Tionesta is storybook like. One of the highlights of this trip was our day at Cook’s Forrest. We hiked through an area known as The Forrest Cathedral. I would highly recommend checking out this spot, there are few places that can compare to the beauty found here.
