About Summit Ridge Lookout Cabin

Summit Ridge Cabin is located near the border of Wyoming in Southwestern South Dakota on the Black Hills National Forest, providing a perfect setting for guests seeking recreation and relaxation. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's, the cabin was originally used as housing for personnel that staffed the adjacent forest fire lookout tower. The cabin is available for reservation throughout the year when accessible. At an elevation of 6,096 feet, it can receive considerable snowfall. The roads to the cabin are not plowed, so generally it is not accessible from December through March.  NOTE: Check with local office for snow conditions during winter months.

What Guests Are Saying

The Summit Ridge Lookout Cabin offers a pleasant and peaceful retreat, easily accessible even in winter conditions. Guests appreciate the well-maintained cabin and its rustic charm, ideal for groups seeking solitude and outdoor activities. However, it's important to note the lack of bedding, nearby water sources, and limited solar power, making it essential to come prepared for a camping-like experience.

Christmas Day weather was pleasant and no snow so able to get to the location without any problem. Where there's been slush, road was occasionally icy in shaded areas. Cabin is very nice. Brought our own inflatable mattresses for the beds. Left door shut to garage-room and used it to store the coolers. Just cold enough to keep the ice for two days with hardly any melting. The woodstove is fantastic.

Stay was fine. They are in the middle of some improvements which would have been nice to know about prior to our stay. Also, the solar power system was basically inoperable (battery not holding charge). There was a note in the cabin from September stating that the system would not hold charge, so it was a known issue. Again would have been nice to know about. Fortunately we brought enough lamps and batteries.

This cabin is a profound joy to experience. It is well kept, well preserved. The remote location is perfectly easy to access and provides ideal peace and quiet.

It was very nice. The road is actually called Summit RIDGE Road. It would be great for a group of 4-8 to hang out as a base for hiking. One should know that there are no views from the cabin, and there is a lot of ATV traffic passing by, and they stop to read the plaque in front of the old lookout tower (which is fenced off and is off-limits). The cabin has flourescent lights operated via a small solar panel on the roof, but at night they only last about 10 minutes.

A quiet place before deer season opens, then the traffic picks up a bit. Rustic but good cabin.

I took my Girl Scout troop here and they loved it. It was very quiet while we were there and the cabin was comfortable.

The location was great, we really enjoyed the solitude and beautiful setting. We came prepared, but some things to know that might otherwise ruin your trip:

1.) The bed frames do NOT have bedding including mattresses, you need to bring your own air mattress, or plan on sleeping on plywood.
2.) There is NO water anywhere nearby. There is no well, there are no streams, or even ponds. The nearest water is in Newcastle, WY, a half hour drive away. Consider that you will want water for more than just drinking; for things like washing, cooking, etc.
3.) There are flies, bring bug spray, citronella candles, etc.
4.) Basically, this place is camping in a wooden cabin/tent, you need to bring everything. We've stayed in 7 prior forest service cabins, this was the least equiped but for $45 a night, it was great!
