Sheridan Lake

Sheridan lake is a very beautiful place to go to! Nice and peaceful and private. Campsites are spaced and laid out very nicely. Highly recommend going here

First night at reserves site I moved to a quieter spot with only 2 other campers in the distance. Man in site next to mine was exposing himself often & entry shed was closed. No one around so I simply moved sites intending to notify host of the change. Next morning I let them know I had moved sites so they could open the reserved one to someone else as the protocol on line said that was acceptable on locations site & Res.gov site. Independent operator has their own restrictions not noted on the other two sites so I didn't know I couldn't move even though the campground was not nearly full. They were forcing me to stay where I was reserved or pay for the "extra" site. I had 3 nights reserved. I left after one night. I can not recommend Sheridan Lake campground due to the rude & inflexible independent operator at this National Forest Service campground. It is not what it seems to be. Beware. Don't reserve sites without fully exploring all & researching thoroughly. Chose your site very carefully or opt for first come first serve. This camper will never be back to Sheridan Lake as long as it's run by whoever is running it now.

We love this campground. We come back every year. This year we were sad to be informed that you don’t get into the lake with the camping pass now. You have to pay for a daily, we have been coming for 6 years.

Amazing camping experience! The pines, fresh air, lake view, and local amenities were superb. Can't wait to return!

I was not happy that we had to pay to access the lake EVERY DAY even though we had paid to camp. I think that is so unfair when we have already paid to camp for several days then to find out we can’t even access the lake without paying!! I will definitely rethink where we camp next year.

There were 4 groups of campers that had a total of 7 dogs never tied/leashed up. The camp host drove by multiple times and clearly saw this and never said a word to them. Another person was walking up the road past our campsite without their dog on a leash and it came running up in our dog in our campsite which was tied up. You now have to pay a day use fee for the beach even when you are camping there, which is absolutely ridiculous. It has really gone downhill this year. I have lived in the Black Hills my entire life and am beyond disappointed by my camping experience at Sheridan Lake. This is always my first choice for camping in the hills, but not anymore.

DO NOT STAY HERE — TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE

After 7 years of staying at this campground, I can confidently say I will NEVER return, and I strongly recommend families stay elsewhere.

Before our trip, I called the number listed on Recreation.gov and specifically asked if I could reserve a site and then switch to a first-come, first-served site when we arrived. I had done this during COVID and wanted to make absolutely certain it was still allowed. I was told YES. I relied on that information.

We drove 6 HOURS with 3 young children to get there. When we arrived, a bee got into our vehicle, the kids became frightened and started screaming. The FIRST thing the campground host said was, "Why are those kids making such a racket?” She rolled her eyes and treated our children like they were an annoyance.

The host told me she was new, but instead of trying to clarify the situation, she told me Recreation.gov “doesn’t know what they’re talking about” and refused to let me switch sites.

I offered to PAY for all 3 nights at a first-come, first-served site. She refused that too. Another camper arrived looking for a site, so I offered him my reserved site for the remaining 2 nights so it would not sit empty, allowing my family to take an available first-come, first-served site for all 3 nights.

Instead of finding a solution, she became angry and said, “You are dealing with me, not him,” and “You will not be checking in here tonight.”

So after driving 6 HOURS with three children, we were refused check-in and left with NOWHERE TO STAY.

Being new is understandable. Treating customers this way is not. If you don't know the policy, find someone who does. Don't contradict the information provided by Recreation.gov, refuse every reasonable solution, and then leave a family stranded after a six-hour drive.

After 7 years of loyalty, I am incredibly disappointed. DO NOT BOOK THIS CAMPGROUND. Families deserve better.

Nice waterfront campsite, clean bathrooms. My only complaint was that there was a $5 fee to use the beach. I thought that should have been included in my camp fee.

Love Sheridan but had lots of yellow jacket wasps this time at our campsite, Smokey Loop 30. Also, was very disappointed that Sheridan charges you to access the swim beach when you’ve already paid to stay there. Rather unethical in my view, very upsetting and I felt this just smacked of greed.
