What Guests Are Saying
Elkmont Campground is praised for its beautiful, well-maintained environment, friendly staff, and clean facilities, making it a great choice for campers looking for a peaceful experience in the Smoky Mountains. Many guests appreciate the primitive nature of the campground, with sites close to the river and ample privacy. However, some reviewers noted challenges with the reservation system and the closure of certain loops, which led to crowding in available areas. Overall, visitors enjoyed their time at Elkmont and expressed a desire to return.

The campground is very clean and quiet. Site A28 get alot of sun in the afternoon. In the summer I dont think Id like that but the temps were cool so I didnt mind it. Behind the site is the dispursed camping so it felt like nobody was behind us.

We really enjoyed this campground. The Camp host was extremely helpful and friendly with lots of good suggestions. The bathrooms were kept clean and serviced, although some of them didn’t have soap to wash up. The sites were well maintained. I like how the sites are a little further spaced apart than most campgrounds. While we were there (mid September) the campground was half empty, so it was very quiet. We would stay here again.

Elkmont has the ability to be a beautiful campground but the lack of funds to support it are really showing. The roads that wind through the campground are in desperate need of repair, not only are they hard on vehicles and bikes, they are a real danger to the people that want to go for a nice walk. We have been going there for years and they have never addressed this dangerous issue. I personally have fallen many times by stepping into one of the numerous deep potholes. You literally cannot walk a few feet without the probability of falling into an ankle breaking hole. Forget walking around the campground at night .It is just pitiful.
They are currently refurbishing Laurel Falls parking areas and trail for who knows how many hundreds of thousands of dollars. They need to throw just a little of that money to Elkmont Campground as it is the busiest of all the campgrounds in the GSMNP system and really needs help. They also need funding to keep the bathrooms open, maintenance on individual campsites and keeping the campsite fire pits cleaned out (so full you can barely build a fire safely and contain it safely).
Some sites with electric and water would be very nice as would a dump site onsite( the nearest one is 7 miles away.)Wi fi would also be a big help because in an emergency, you would have to drive out several miles to the nearest spot to call for help(if you were lucky enough to know where to look).
On the plus side, the Park Rangers are very nice and the hosts are as well. The sites for the most part are well spaced and have lots of shade.

Campsite was great. Space was great, we had no neighbors - the entire back lot was empty. The bathroom was closed, but the dishwashing sink was still open to be used. Rangers were incredibly helpful and kind, we had to leave early and I thankfully was able to get a refund on one of the nights. Small camp store with plenty of necessities - wood, ice, drinks, map, etc.

Rangers were knowledgeable and recognized me as a hiker. I strongly suggest speaking with Rangers, and seeking out the old camp built in the 20's or so. Very interesting. The trails were fantastic.

The grounds were clean and the facilities clean. However, I was in G23, the tent pad flooded and I had to move. Afterwards it was apparent that the site floods often. Not sure how the staff couldn't have known that and suggested I move to a site near G23, all of which were available.

Terrible. Don’t reserve this beautiful riverside campsite. (Leave it free for me to reserve all year round!)

Good place for stay and visit this park, save your time for in & out everyday, if you stay outside the park.

No soap in several of the men’s restrooms. Many lights in and around bathrooms were burnt out.
