Group site 04 and the whole group camping area are great. They are very private and large enough for three and even for four large tents. It was so much fun camping with other families, and it was an easy walk to see the fireflies. The bathrooms and water are very close and we had no problems at all. The only thing is walking up and down the stairs to the car to get and put away food, but it wasn’t that much of an inconvenience. This was a great experience for us.

This was an awesome group campsite. Highly recommend GP02 out of all the group sites. GP01 would be my second choice. They are the two flattest options with the most space. We had our 1.5 yr. old with us and while there are ledges (maybe 2 ft tall) and a few steps, it is the safest for small kids. The other sites are in steeper, more rugged spots. The sites are just BEAUTIFUL and we saw many wild turkeys and one coyote. There is a lot of poison ivy/oak around the site though, so don't let little ones wander too far unsupervised. Multiple great spots to hang hammocks (we had 5 set up at one point and there was still space for more). You can maybe comfortably fit 6 tents of various sizes on the 2 tent pads, but it was tight. We had a group of 13 (a lot of single people, hence the # of tents and hammocks) and it was the perfect size. It could fit many more if you're sharing tents. The fire pit space is awesome and the picnic tables were nice quality (fiberglass, not wood, so they wiped dry easily after it rained). My only complaints were the state of the bathrooms. The counter and toilets themselves were clean and there was toilet paper and soap, but the building was COVERED in bugs (moths, centepedes, spiders, etc. which, I get it, it's in the woods, what can you do). And the price of wood at the camp store must have increased recently...nearly $10 a bundle for wet wood, wasn't very happy about that, hence 4 stars. Regardless, we will definitely be back (we will just bring our own approved wood next time).

Excellent central location within the park. Less than an hour to Cades Cove, 15 minutes to Gatlinburg and Sugarlands, an hour to Cherokee. Yet still felt secluded. Great walks in the woods.

Great site for a group. Has 6 picnic tables & 2 fire pits, would be nice if it were directly next to the river but it's only a 3 minute walk away.

We had Elkmont Group camp #4. The space was awesome and very secluded from all other campsites! The fire pit had a removable grill grate, which is super helpful! The 3 bay grill in the picnic area is hard to get coals underneath the grates, plus it is a two person job to move the grate up or down. The porta-potties were super clean and no one minded that the bathroom was closed! Would definitely repeat this campsite again!
The ranger who was there was also really really helpful and friendly! She was a great source of knowledge and just plain fun to talk to too!

Cash in your life's savings to buy ice. $4.38 a bag. It was so hot and with 19 people we had to buy 8-10 bags a day. Buy in town in you are headed that way.

The combination of the lack of bathrooms and the camp store was very frustrating. It seems like the campground would have a lower fee while these inconveniences are ongoing

From Cherokee, NC: Take Newfound Gap Road (aka U.S. 441) North through the park into Tennessee. Turn left at Sugarlands Visitor Center. Follow Little River Road approx. 4.5 miles. Turn left at the Elkmont Campground sign and proceed 1.5 miles to the campground office.
From Gatlinburg, TN: Take Newfound Gap Road (aka U.S. 441) South into the Park. (If coming from Pigeon Forge, take the Bypass into the park.) Turn a right at Sugarlands Visitor Center. Proceed 4.5 miles to the Elkmont entrance and turn left at the Elkmont Campground sign. Go 1.5 miles to the campground office.
Elkmont Group Camp is accessible via Newfound Gap Road (U.S. 441), which connects to major routes leading into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park from both Gatlinburg and Cherokee.

General
- A valid parking tag is required for any vehicle parking for more than 15 minutes in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Front country campers parked at their designated campsite will not be required to have a parking tag. If they park elsewhere in the park, a parking tag will be required. Please note that parking tags will be required for vehicles in excess of what is allowable for each campsite.
- Over the last 10 years, an average of 339 negative human-bear encounters have been reported each year; many more go unreported. Visitors should be aware that high bear activity can occur in any area, and that your safety is not guaranteed. To increase your odds for a safe visit, please follow best practices for living and recreating in bear habitat. Stay alert and be prepared to react appropriately during possible encounters, and always report any unusual bear interactions as soon as possible.
- Caution: Bears and other wildlife frequent the area. All food and equipment used to prepare and store food must be kept in a sealed vehicle or camping unit of solid, non-pliable material AT ALL TIMES when not in use. All scented items, as well as all water containers MUST be stored. Dispose of garbage promptly in dumpsters provided. Unattended or improperly stored coolers, food and/or scented items may be impounded by campground staff. Violators are subject to fines.
- Dispose of garbage promptly in bear-proof dumpsters. This rule is strictly enforced!
- Firewood Restriction: Only heat-treated firewood bundled in its original packing and bearing a certification seal from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) or a state department of agriculture may be brought into the park. This rule is strictly enforced. Campers may also collect dead and down wood in the park for campfires. For additional information about these firewood regulations, please visit the park website at http://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/frontcountry-camping .
- Heat-treated wood is available from a growing list of private businesses in communities around the park. Please visit www.nature.org/firewoodmap for a list of available vendors near the park. Concessioners at Cades Cove, Elkmont, and Smokemont will provide heat-treated wood for sale during their operating season. Certified heat-treated firewood is packaged and clearly marked with a state or federal seal.
- You must check-in with the campground office staff UPON ARRIVAL to complete your reservation. If you arrive after the office is CLOSED for the day then you must check-in with the campground staff the following day between , . Failure to check-in with the office staff may forfeit your reservation.
- There are no showers or electric, water or sewer hook-ups in the park. Some group sites are accessible.
- Generator use is prohibited in group camps.
- Fires are allowed in fire rings only!
- A minimum of 7 people is required for group site use. Maximum site capacity varies from 15 to 30 people. The park stay limit is 14 consecutive days.
- A Tennessee or North Carolina fishing license is required to fish in the park. Special regulations apply in the park.
- Pets are permitted but cannot be left unattended. All pets must be kept on a leash at all times. Pets are not allowed on trails.
