About Backbone Rock Campground

Backbone Rock Campground will open for the 2026 season on 4/27/26. The pavilion and vault toilets in the day-use area will open on 3/16/26. Backbone Rock is a small campground situated along the beautiful Beaverdam Creek at an elevation of 2,100 feet in northern Johnson County. This developed campground is popular with those visiting the nearby Backbone Rock, a tunnel originally blasted through the rock ridge for the railway. The creek side location with popular swim area and lush forest surroundings make Backbone Rock Campground particularly desirable during hot summer months. With 10 campsites and an adjacent large Civilian Conservation Corps- built reservable pavilion with lawn, Backbone Rock is a great option for a group to reserve the whole campground for retreats and other events.

What Guests Are Saying

Backbone Rock Campground is a well-maintained and picturesque site with only 11 campsites, offering lovely views of a creek and a quiet, secluded atmosphere. Camp host Mike is highly praised for his helpfulness and the cleanliness of the facilities, including well-kept bathrooms. While some visitors noted noise from nearby roads and a lack of amenities like showers and lights, the campground's natural beauty and proximity to Damascus make it a favorite for many.

We always enjoy our time in this beautiful rustic camp ground! The only suggestion we have is to perhaps add a dish washing station to the right of the potable water access, similar to a fish cleaning station. That way people can get water without having to wait for the dishwashing to finish.

Beautiful shady primitive camp ground down the side of a creek. Bathrooms have no shower but are very nice, and very clean. Backbone rock and waterfall is a great hike. Or you can hike from the site up to the AT over a mountain to Damascus, Va. I will go back.

We love this campground. It was quiet and beautiful. Lots of trees and a beautiful river. At the entrance to the campground is a wonderful place for you to swim. Also, it is 3 miles from Damascus which we love and we enjoyed the Creeper Trail. What a beautiful area.

very beautiful campground next to a pristine stream with a clean bathroom as well as a number of spring fed(?) water spigots outside. Make sure you have a waterproof sleep area (I did- waterproof tent) as it rained hard the night I was there.

Great location and clean campgrounds. Lack of cell coverage was a plus. Nice to get away, and relax. Damascus is only a short drive away.
